    Anthony,
not wanting to get on anyones case at all here, but with all that has been said and done, some true, some fact, some myth, etc.
and it has been a long time in comming, some people must be like me and have forgoten all that has actually been done,
An update that says what has been done so far would be well received i am sure. That always assumes that the info is not already out there and i am just too dumb to find it.

    Any how,
    cheers for now,
    The Melter

This is how she looked on Saturday. You'll also see the sheen on Mallard - she looks gorgeous :clap2:

Slightly off topic, but that shade of garter blue on Mallard is extremely pleasing there.

And the pressure guage in the smokebox suggests leak testing of some sort.

Interesting to see the outside steam pipes are the A4 pattern straight through instead of the double right angle pipes originally fitted. No doubt they were fitted at the prevoious overhaul to streamline the passages as much as possible.

And what's significant about 163 when applied to 4472?

I thought the Gresley A1/A3 Pacifics had straight steam pipes from the start. By double right angle, do you mean similar to those on a GWR King or Castle?

Sure i read some work was required on the superheater header, that may explain the pressure testing.

No, the pipe was vertical then horizontal and then vertical again but all within the confines of the angled casing beside the smokebox. Not sure why, though it may have been intended to allow the pipework to move slightly more without straining the joint. I think the photo I saw was in the RCTS volume on the LNER pacifics.

Edit - there was a bolted flange joint in the horizontal part

At the risk of firing up the "Authenticy" debate, I suppose this is one of many questions which the NRM has to address. Does it keep a modification/improvement to the loco which was carried out by a previous (private) owner, or does it return it to the "correct"/original design where possible.

Taking a loco straight from "active service", it would at least be authentic to its last operating days. But a loco which has been in private hands for many years may have had a modifications along the way.

Which then raises the question - once again - of the authenticity of German windshields and double tenders; I'm sure that some would even argue for the chime whistle and cowcatchers fitted for the American trip and used on the tour from KX to York and the Durham Coast before its trip as being a valid interpretation for future Network running.
I feel the "authenticity" debate is nugatory and linesiders should simply be grateful to see the locomotive back in action - irrespective of cosmetic appearance.

After all the male of the species is supposed to prefer see in their women in "powder and paint"; be grateful that 4472 offers a wider choice of paint finishes.

    Authenticity is subjective.
