Since the pipes are not visible once the covers are on, it makes no sense to even consider going back to an inferior layout.

I see that as well as the second part of his interview with Steve Davies in Steam Railway, David Wilcock is also covering 4472's overhaul in his Running Free column. Just leave the NRM alone and let them and Riley's get on with returning her to service however long it takes regardless of authenticity.

All the moaning from the press is not helping and getting really irritating now.

Hear hear. The truth is, a few people who have the expertise and understanding of these matters know more than the rest of us and are dealing with the issues. Let them get on with it.

Not sure that I do agree with this stance - it is in some ways an argument against discussing anything. There seems to have been a marked reluctance in the heritage railway press generally to discuss anything unpalateable and perhaps DWs interview, whilst appearing to be somewhat unsympathetic, goes some way towards redressing the situation? Questions should be asked and answered; the NRM does have a moral obligation to be open and honest (in my opinion)
    It certainly is.

Everybody wants to blame Steam Railway but all there doing is presenting the facts ,if you read the article there is a audit going on into what as gone wrong and where the money as gone .Why is it still at York is it money?, not helped by the fact the of reported loss of £215,000 on rail fest. I note they chose not to print anything about the investigation into alleged nepotism

If the investigation is ongoing then there are legal reasons not to print anything that might influence the outcome.

As I have said before, some things are in the public domain, others aren't.

Stories sell newspapers and the magazines have picked up on these stories, whether they are completely true or not.

Please as before, can we keep this to the A3?

While I totally agree that no-one should rush to judgement until all the facts are known and cases for the prosecution and defence, in the widest sense, put, there are clearly questions to be answered,I cannot understand this forelock tugging 'Them up there know what's best' attitude. It is not always safe to assume that everyone in a public service has acted competently. If this attitude had been adopted towards to the Hillsborough disaster the incompetence and dishonesty of various individuals, some public servants, would never had been known. In any venture where individuals have made a financial contribution, whether by donation or through Heritage Lottery Fund, there should be an absolute right to ask for proof that the money has been wisely spent. In the case of the NRM there are several issues that need to be explained - the Scotsman financial over-run, the nepotism allegations, the loss made a Railfest and now the report that a valuable item of rolling stock has been damaged by rain. It is not enough to get a pat on the head and be told to leave it to to those who know more than we do. Anything to do with a national museum supported out of public funds should, ultimately, be in the public domain.

Given the mentality of some of the people on here Anthony, you've as much chance of that as King Knut did when he tried to turn back the tide.

    Its a real shame 4470 or 2750 weren't preserved too :(

Anthony, any chance of re-uniting all of the remaining LNER pacifics next year? A1, A2, A3 and 6x A4's? Maybe even the entire remaining LNER fleet!

It does appear fashionable to knock the NRM at the moment, just like it was with the Olympics before they happened. Like the Olympics, I suspect that, once 60103 is up an running, all will be wonderful and everything that has gone before will be forgotten about.
As long as the colour is right and the smoke deflectors and the double chimney are appropriately fitted, that is!

A proper investigation followed by a report is one thing, trial by internet forum is another matter entirely.

Read the first sentence of the post and engage brain. What constitutes a 'proper investigation - do you mean like the Police Complaints procedure? As long as we have all the information no one can complain and I am not suggesting that an internet forum is the place for that information to be placed. I am merely using the forum to ask for that it be available at some point.

In the real world you will find that another state owned dept., namely the Ministry of Defence, probably wastes the value of the Scotsman project every day of the year due to incompetence & late running projects. People would be better complaining about this, as it is the likes of this which hits you in the pocket.

Sorry, I forgot that railway preservation is not the real world and that in it two wrongs make one of them right. It seems that any comment seen as criticism on this forum, even when it is not, is treated as if one had been caught swearing in church.
