To be honest, digital black and white doesn't even come close to the proper stuff. That is a good pic though.

I think that one trouble with digital is that it's to easy to mess around trying to get it better and as a result the picture ends up being so obviously doctored and false. Sadly some appear on here.

I agree with that. To Photoshop an image to within a pixel of its life, just because you can, will seldom improve a poor photograph (unless it has been deliberately underexposed) and occasionally may actually detract from the quality of the original. But I will admit to sometimes removing an offending overhead wire or gantry support. As an aside, depending on the subject matter, people are often better in b&w as in this picture, which is actually what it is all about, in my view.

The locos in the 1964 b&w film "The Train" set in Wartime France had similar mesh arrangements.

Yes Al I agree. I try to do as little as possible to the images from my Canon though most of the time if I get the exposure right they don't need anything anyway. I will also remove offending extras from time to time including hi viz. It's only now though with 18 mega pixels available that I have accepted finally that digital colour equals if not exceeds the quality I got with my Bronica ETR-C and Ektachrome or my Pentax KX with K25. However I don't think digital will ever equal black and white neg film for depth and quality. One of my favourite combinations was Kodak Tri X developed in Microdol X diluted 1 to 3.

Deep envy over that photo - where it is and what it is.

I am informed by someone who does photography for a living that b&w film works far better with very contrasty subject material as no matter what you do on digital there is always an element of compromise. Solution - choose your composition carefully!
