Thanks for posting that. I wonder if that particular saddle tank was lettered because of the almost flat tank sides, or was it Caerphilly Works expressing its individuality?

After being absorbed into GWR stock, the vast majority of absorbed engines were painted in whatever was the current GWR livery once they entered works for shopping. The only exceptions were those that were sold off or scrapped without being put through one of the GWR works, and possibly some of the small 0-4-0 tanks where there was insufficient space to apply the standard sized lettering transfers.

It is worth looking through the illustrations in "A Pictorial Record of Great Western Absorbed Engines" by J. H. Russell, or Part 10 Absorbed Engines of the RCTS series; "Locomotives of the Great Western Railway". Here you can see examples of almost every type of absorbed engine carrying the 'Great Western' lettering.

There were all sorts of odd exceptions. In post 1942 liveries I've seen (even though I can't lay my hands on it now) a photo of one small tank engine carrying only the letters GW, not the full GWR.

Hey Folks - sorry for resurrecting an old thread but trying to find out some information on the PTR livery, short of buying GWW, and 813 seems to be the best route - does anyone know if lined chocolate was the correct livery? Having looked at various pictures it doesn't seem that PTR locos were lined, though I could be wrong

    Thanks

GWW says chocolate, but on careful reading is rather non committal on the subject of lining. A summary would be "If it was it soon disappeared". As you probably know there is a picture of 813 newly built and lined in photographic grey on the 813 web pages.

There's a photo of 812( PTR 25) on the gwr813 page showing lining on the cabside. I suspect if you had a higher resolution version you'd be able to see it on other parts as well.

I have found my copy of the book "Port Talbot Railway & Docks" by Robin G Simmonds!
The PTR locomotives appear to be lined.
All PTR locos appear to be painted brown.
There is a photo of PTR 25 on page 210 of the book showing the loco lined.

    Bit more:
....painted in The Barry Style .. a shade of brown known as 'India Red' edged in black and with white- black- white lining......
Inside frames and buffer beams painted vermillion.

    Hope this helps.

813 is at Beamish Museum at present. Will return to The SVR for the Autumn Gala, then off to pastures new and old!

Looking forward to seeing the Autumn Gala timetable to see if she gets some full line runs. It was fun a couple of years ago with the number of locals that started/terminated at AY
It wasn't the best timetable for timekeeping, but there aren't many times there are 4 trains at AY at once!

After the SVR Autumn Gala, the Locomotive will be at Didcot for a couple of months. Then back to The SVR for some Santa Duties.

Well events have somewhat changed for this ambassador of Heritage Railways! The locomotive will be moving from Beamish to GWS Didcot. She will not be attending The SVR Autumn Gala.
Here the loco will spend about three months before returning to The SVR for the Chappie with the big white beard trains. :)
