Talking about picking up trains gradually I believe that it was discovered when having a rake propelled with the DVT leading that the train needs to be treated almost like an old fashioned freight. Buckeye couplers are as not as solid as one might expect. There is a certain amount of slack and the drawhooks are sprung, usually with rubber donuts. When the loco starts pushing from the rear this small amount of slack needs to be compressed as each coach is picked up to stop the DVT being instantly propelled into motion.
