I usually go on holiday to North Wales in may, but picking a full week this year is almost impossible, hopefully I will make it down for may day weekend, but clashing with NYMR means I wont be able to make the full week if I ma to make it back to NYMR for their second weekend. As a result I am trying to pick spot in June, question is what is on in June?

I don't think there are any galas in June and as for mainline steam steam it's just too erratic as which trains will run to base a holiday around them! I don't know about the timetables for the narrow guage lines though.

    Enjoy your break!

    Regards

On Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 19th June to 4th July the Dean Forest Railway are holding a 'Severn & Wye Railway Festival' celebrating 200 years since the line was opened.

On Saturdays and Sundays, 19th & 20th June and 3rd & 4th July a special timetable will operate with two steam locomotives.
A Gala weekend will be held over 26th & 27th June with various types of passenger and freight trains, plus double heading, using all available locomotives from the homefleet (should be 1450, 5541, 9681 and Wilbert by June) plus guest locomotives including 3440 'City of Truro'.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays, 23rd & 24th June and 30th June & 1st July 'Timetable B' will operate will the guest locomotives and either the DMU or a heritage diesel locomotive.

(info above taken from the 2010 leaflet)

For more info http://www.deanforestrailway.co.uk/events.html and look at the top of the right hand panel.

This would be an ideal time to visit the railway and also provides a gala to attend in June.

In mid June there are gala wekends at Keighkey, The South Devon and West Somerset Railways. The WSR is holding a Mixed Traffic weekend.
    On the 19th it's Llangollen.
Saturday there's three main line tours advertised to Penzance (1 steam & 2 diesel) The same day children travel free at Tenterden.

Like me 'pennysteam' doesn't go to diesel events ('pennysteam', geddit?). The events at Keighley and South Devon are advertised as diesel galas, the WSR's mixed traffic event usually has more diesels than steam. The Llangollen's website doesn't as yet list an event in June but I would imagine it too is a diesel event as the diesel community doesn't seem to be able to get up when its dark and dismal in the autumn to spring periods.

Sorry to be rude to those who have a passion for Herr Doctor Diesel's machine ...

    Regards

NNR have a mixed traffic event on the 5th and 6th June. Last year it featured 3 steam locos, 2 diesel locos, a DRB and DMU so pretty balanced on the steam/ diesel front.

Think that's probably more to do with the majority of the country's preserved lines using steam heat stock, and the small number of diesels with working boilers?

The Llangollen Railway will hold a DMU Gala on the last weekend of June. The Severn Valley holds the 1st of 2 1940s weekends on the same weekend as the DMU Gala.

There are as yet NO main line specials along the North Wales Coast to Holyhead yet. But it's still early days yet.
