Long story on how i found the photo, but does anyone know anything about the Hawthorn Leslie engine behind Leatherhead leisure centre? You can see it from google maps, painted sky blue.

    Thanks in advance

Talk to Mitchell from the Mid-Hants - he was very interested in this loco a few years back, and I think he made some enquiries. Mitchell used to be on here but I'm not sure if he still posts or reads the forum.

EDIT: Link to the loco entry on UKLocos database: http://www.uklocos.com/liveloco-results.asp?action=display&id=5253

I checked out the link, but was it not also at Swanage for a while? I'm sure 16 and 21 were acquired from Shackerstone at the same time, and an early Swanage video shows it being prepared for the trip to Leatherhead. 21 was also painted the same light blue colour.

Looks in a sorry state in the photo on the link. Take it it is owned by the leisure centre? Just seemed a strange place for an engine to be.

Yes Rumpole you are correct, 16 did come to 71B with 21.

21 got repainted into a darker blue (something akin to S&D prussian blue), lined out on one side only (don't ask!) and named "Linda" by it's owner (Keith Pfrangley) though I can't recall nameplates being fitted. Had quite a few firing turns on 21, plus the odd driving turn as Passed Fireman.

16, as I recall, was in pretty poor shape and a decision was taken not to restore her. I think the boiler barrel was thin in places but I could be wrong, it's a long time ago!

The Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation society has just purchased 3837 from Mole Valley district council where she has been standing for over 25 years behind Leatherhead leisure centre. We are now in the process of moving her to her new home where she will be fully overhauled into full working order. Any one with any infomation please let ne know many thanks

Thats great news. Will 3837 be staying in the South or moving further afield. I'm sure the lads at Cottesmore would welcome you there.

i know of a nice little place that would love to take your engine, its not that far away, down here in kent we are looking for suitable engines to restore and once restored you have several lines near by that would certainly want to make use of it, such as east kent etc

HL 3837 was built circa 1934 for Stewarts & Lloyds new Corby Steelworks where it was allocated fleet number 16 and was painted yellow with wasp stripes on the bunker; it was one of a batch of about 10 locomotives built by HL for S&L and worked at Corby until the early 1970s within the Steelworks Complex.
