Strictly speaking as a mixed traffic engine they were all originally black but the Western Region began painting theirs Green in the late 1950s. I had a footplate ride on this loco banking a parcels train up Shap in 1967.

It may be some time before that happens Knut - it's just a cosmetic restoration for the minute!

Whilst talking of BR standard locomotives in green livery ,I have never seen any class 4MT 2-6-4tank painted in green. Has that ever appeard in service live or in preservation?

Here's my reply in the N.Y.M.R. thread as to the why's and where for's of 80135 being turned out in B.R. green. Whilst yes some did end up on Western Region like the 3MT 2-6-2 tanks, they didn't last long enough to get the "Swindon Green" treatment :(:

Indeed speaking of the Moors "fairy Godfather" so to speak. Jos De Crau was a Dutchman of that generation to have lived through and remembered the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. As such he had a certain amount of hostility to the Germans, thus he felt black engines were a sign of "the Bad Guys" i.e. the Nazi regime and as such felt 80135 shouldn't be black. So he'd taken a liking to LMS maroon and as the 4mt tanks were based on the LMS design leading to the liking. Though was talked into changing to BR Green as per the smaller 2-6-2 3mt tanks and the rest as they say is history. Why none were painted green in BR days I don't know, but, as the Moors has operated 80135 for far longer than BR, green is now a historic livery for her at least and personally speaking quite nice too.

Well 80135 has been "Green in normal service" all my life so far, which is sadly much longer than BR used it. We have to understand that not every owner wishes to recreate a historical artefact. Green suits the loco aesthetically to my mind and offers a "what if ..." version for us to visualise.

Possibly sacrilegious here, but these days I find myself quite liking a line that has a clear 'house style' and some consistent themes rather than a slightly hotch-potch mix. I guess the IWSR has the advantage that SR green was carried on into BR for the carriages, so the odd BR loco doesn't look too out of place if the stock is kept in SR green to match the green engines.

Actually quite true. All of our stuff and activities are firmly located in 'leisure & entertainment.'
