There’s something I was wondering about. Did any of the J50 tank engines wear the Apple Green livery while in LNER service? Or were they only painted black?

Not an LNER expert, but I would guess they were always black

If this is for a model, I’d suggest asking on RM Web.

Pretty sure Woodford Halse had some green J50s at nationalisation (which stayed green, and indeed LNER, for a while). Will check with a Woodford man from the time this week hopefully.

I had a similar query a year or two ago but he was adamant that the J50s were green.

Third photo down appears to show 8891 in full lined green LNER livery. I assumed that it was merely a figment of Lima's imagination when they made one in OO gauge, but possibly not.

I believe only one J50 made it into lined green LNER livery. This was during the post war LNER era, when the company wanted to shackle off the thoughts of war and make a stamp on a fresh beginning, so an order of 'everything in green' was issued but was actually short lived due to the writing on the wall (cost and impending nationalisation).

This did result in numerous classes that were generally regarded as mixed traffic or freight seeing anything between one and a handful of members repainted. On my own patch, this included to ex-NB J36's No. 5211 and No. 5330 (seen in model form).

I understand at least one J83 also got this livery

8891 was a Woodford engine at nationalisation so that tallies with what I've been told by those who were there - so there you go, if it was indeed the only one then you can have a green J50. But apparently only if you're modelling Woodford Halse! So, actually, I'm ok there...
