We do have cctv in the yard, but when we looked at it the scum appeared at 01.15 this morning complete with head torches.
Members of the dmu group, with some help from a couple of others, had removed the graffiti from the bodyside and windows of one unit. I had to leave at 16.00 so don't know if they have started on the second vehicle.
It's a shame for the lads to have this happen following some great work by their group to help the railway to re-start services.

    Bob.

Partial solution may be to have a webcam or two with public access but encourage volunteers and supporters just to take a look from time to time and report anything suspicious. A few hundred pairs of eyeballs randomly looking may be better than cctv which by all accounts doesnt seem to act as a sufficient deterrent to those of ill intent,

If vandals who are caught are let off with not much worse than a caution, despite being guilty of criminal damage, what about a civil lawsuit against them?

Somehow, in most cases, I doubt there's likely to be sufficient chance of meeting legal costs, much less achieving any effective pecuniary redress .... and before considering the percentage who'll never be so much as questioned under caution.

Perhaps this is a problem which needs some fresh appraisal. I don't claim any insight into the mindset of such individuals, but I find myself thinking in terms of the most basic considerations relevant to fire prevention i.e. fuel: oxygen: ignition source. If it's possible to identify analogous elements in this case, it seems the most likely place to find some practical solution.

Sounds like there must be a book of justifications for this sort of action. In a previous property our neighbours fencing contractors entered our garden - cut down some shrubs - used my beehives as a saw bench and strimmed part of our garden which had been left to go wild. "we thought the land was abandoned" was their excuse. Small claims court got us some compensation.

Obviously a planned operation by the vandals then. Glad to hear that remedial action has started.

    Good fencing.
Not only does it help with security, but also safety as it restricts unauthorised access.

Then you want lighting. Motion-activated lights are cheap, & they produce a reaction which might be noticed by neighbours.

There are now some motion activated sensor systems which can be linked to sending texts for alerts. Hopefully will wake someone who can then set an onsite alarm with lights, get to the site or call police. Hopefully will be able to catch them in the act of spraying graffiti and be found guilty of a criminal offence.

However raising cash for railway operations is hard enough, but some money spent for better security will pay off!

Fencing only keeps honest people out. Modern Palisade is the easiest thing in the world to get through if you know how and too many people know how. The best thing I have found is a dense hawthorn hedge; that takes time to get through but it also takes time to get established and usually needs maintenance.

No doubt the miscreants have glorified their exploits on social media as they appear to be hobbyists.

Is there an online timetable available? A search with the help of Google didn't find one.
