According to the VCT database a privately owned RBR modified to full kitchen is stored on LR http://www.cs.rhrp.org.uk/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=4742

Not much use for the Spa Valley dining train given its location ;)

I was thinking about 1697 the other day when the discussion about the RMB sale and was wondering if conversation back to RBR would be cost effective and actually cheaper than the trust attempting to compete with the offer from the Spa Valley.

This vehicle is owned by the same person as 6430 + autocoaches so will be leaving soon. Worth noting the vehicle has only ever been air braked when on LR, so has never done anything other than sit in a siding. I believe the owner acquired it hoping that LR would convert it to vacuum.

That’s a shame then as potentially could of had a future use on the line.

I’m not sure it’s correct that it was only ever air braked. AFAIK, as built all RB’s (which were later converted to RBR configuration) were built Vacuum braked, some also dual braked. Conversation to air only came later on.

Clarification added, it certainly hasn’t ever been equipped with vacuum while at LR

    This group does:

I think they intend to keep them at Llangollen for future use when the LR Trust reopens the line.

Cheers Alan. I've seen video clips of cab rides on the LR, but no mention of the units relating to the current situation.

Good news. I think I've mentioned before that they are a good set-up.

Given that it has tables presumably more use than a CK or SK. An RMB does also have additional flexibility as a Bar selling extra drinks or snacks, as has already been pointed out

Destination Buckfastleigh I believe for some work to be carried out. Anyone got any idea where it’s ultimately headed?

The Autocoach is supposed to be going to Chinnor to run with 6412. Is it actually going to Buckfastleigh first or direct to Chinnor?

It was stripped for contract valve and piston work when the PLC went into receivership, so requires that work finishing.

Interesting to hear that there has been quite a few different railways viewing the items today, and I’m sure there will be more tomorrow. One apparently has a 6 figure budget to spend on coaches, although several have, up until very recently, been advertising appeals to save their lives from closure.

When such large amounts of money are spare to make these purchases, you wonder if the situation was as bad as made out for some of these appeals, or maybe the appeals were just much more successful than the equivalent at LR seems to be (and LR are surely the line who needs help the most).

It may be that money is available from railways' charitable trusts for purchases such as this that wasn't available for paying bills to keep railways afloat, or possibly money from appeals set aside for certain things have since been able to be paid for by the government grant money, freeing up the donated money for carriage purchases.

Investment in rolling stock makes sense, you can't find a coach load of passengers on the footplate!

Anyone still worried they are going to be scrapped?!

Now the viewings are taking place, the bids should soon start rolling in. Will be interesting to see the final prices and destinations.

Just to add to the other replies, another reason could be that a railway could be actively raising funds to purchase more stock. I know the CVR have been running an appeal for example, they were looking for 4 more coaches in total, for a railway such as that this is potentially an ideal opportunity to purchase the required stock possibly in a condition they only dreamed of. Will be interesting to see when the winning bidders are revealed whose bought what.

Yes in the case of the exhibition coach, hope to be proved wrong though!!!

The rest look like they will sell but then there are no scrappers being offered in the auction, which is what I originally questioned with an absence of knowing what was actually going to be for sale. The other interesting thing will be if the winning bidders have purchased additions or replacements for their fleets.
