Showing wheel casting with GWR on it ?
    Does anybody know why ?
Worth stating this is a Southern Railway built loco.

When a loco is overhauled many items are changed or replaced, including wheels and boilers. In theory the heart of the loco, the frames stay with it but the LMS produced some spare frames for Black 5s to speed up overhauls so who knows.

Many 8Fs, 8400-99 with built up balance weights, 8430-78 with cast balance weights, were built at Swindon. As Johnb says, things get moved around at overhauls and this loco has acquired a wheelset from the first of those two batches

Is there any contemporary evidence for this? I've not come across anything that states this was the case, and there seem to be plenty of cases where frames were swapped or replaced if necessary, just like any other component.

48624 is not exactly a southern built locomotive; southern assembled from parts supplied is nearer the mark - frames from Crewe, wheels from Swindon, current boiler is boiler off something else which served in Iraq.

There is no evidence. At the end of the day, the number is there for accounting and operational reasons. It was usual to keep the number with the kit of parts that came into the works as it would be a bit chaotic to have two locos with the same number but any of those parts, including frames and especially boilers, could be swapped around to suit the circumstances. However, as the overhauled loco is generally built up around the frames, these are much less likely to get swapped in the overhaul process unless you have spare ones.

It's still sufficiently "Southern" for those of us who live south of the Thames - well,. me for one - to hope that one of the heritage lines in this area will invite it down as a guest engine one of these days.

48624 is finally coming to the end of its extended boiler ticket. The last weekend in traffic will be 27/28 July. We are hoping to organise a gathering of 8F members and friends of the engine at the GCR on Saturday 27th, the details remain to be settled. The locomotive has received absolutely first class care at the GCR, both in operation and maintenance.

48624 was built with GWR wheels from Swindon and the engine assembled at Ashford one of only 12 built there. Spending its entire life on BR at Willesden.

We may be quite sure a time machine cannot be built since Rous-Marten doesn't record a large number of strangely dressed spectators on Wellington Bank on 9th May 1904...

I believe for all of its BR period it was paired with a Fowler tender

Out of curiousity, have any 8Fs run with a Fowler tender in preservation?

(Edited because I quoted the wrong post by accident!)
