My pics from the evening runs yesturday: Underground/Met 150 - 13/01/13 - a set on Flickr

I might put up my shots from the daytime run later, but they are pretty poor due to the crowds, so have to see if some major surgery can save them.

Looking at this thread properly since my quick post at 2am, I have to say there's some very good pics on here, obviously everyones been practicing low light photting with a moving subject.

Where would we be without new sensitive digital cameras.

I remember when I used to sell 800ISO film - about once in 3 years!

I was up to ISO 1600 last night, which on the camera in question (EOS 50D) is as far as I would push it..... My 7D is being repaired, but that I tend not to push any further either, as the noise does start to become too noticeable**, so I tend to balance adjusting the exposure in 'Lightroom' with keeping the noise in-check. [And too be honest, it is fairly dark in the tunnel stations, so the photos try and capture this!] A decent lens helps, as having a lower f/number gives a bit more margin than the kit-lens. But to be honest, it was a bit of make-it-up as I went along last night!

    Cheers,
    Alisdair

** I generally work on the basis that the highest 2 ISO settings are normally 'pushed beyond the limit'...

As an aside, this is a scan from one of my Dad's slides of a 1963 working, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Metropolitan Line, with '5 John Hampden' at the helm, and from what I understand was the year following the main withdrawal of these locos.

A telling remark from LUL on the BBC webs its. Looks like London's Undergound could be an exciting place to be now and again in the future.
"However Sam Mullins, director of the London Transport Museum, hinted that this could happen more often.
"We will do more events like this this year and more into the future, here and on other railways," he said."

Yes. The 50D is a capable camera but doesn't like high ISO settings that's for sure. I had considered hiring an f1.8/35mm but whilst that would have kept ISO levels lower, depth of field would have been compromised. In the end I brought forward my planned camera upgrade by a few months and went for one with good high ISO performance.

That's the joy of the new sensors and software that are being deployed in new digital cameras, the ability to shoot moving subjects in very low light levels. Opens up a whole new world.

Whatever cameras or settings being used there have been a plethora of excellent shots posted of the event. Lets hope next weekend continues the same way.

While I can see that this is becoming a highly popular subject from photographers I'm still very sceptical about the quality of the images being produced. Grain has it's part to play in photography and is very effective when used properly but from what I've seen camera technology has a very long way to go before it can produce a high quality shot of a moving object in low lighting or at 'night'.

Back in Dawlish after a packed weekend........travelled on 3 trips in diff coaches and was stunned by going on the freshly restored first class coach. As others have said this is wonderful and comfortable with good legroom. Travelling on the Chesham set was special. the efforts made by all Tfl staff( and actors) and musicians was amazing. The museum use some agency staff who were very enthusiastic - young and old.

A major achievement for so many groups. I spotted Bill Parker who was proud of the Flour Mill work on L1/44.

the list of major sponsors was interesting. Many dug Very deep so a huge thank you to them as we'll as the seemingly hundreds of willing helpers. Many retired LT managers and underground staff were helping or attending. My district line driver gave a résumé of the celebrations.........

This is a very censored report but the day proved very special indeed with a tv interview and many pics taken of my friend and I in a jokey top hat..........it was great fun + I crawled into bed very happy esp with public transport shown to be vital, good quality, professional ,friendly and of interest to everyone not just keen NP types.

Thanks to everyone involved in any way. Quite exceptional.

    Thanks for sharing that.
Valve settings sounded a bit out on the second shot, exhaust beat a bit uneven.
Great to see the video though, would have loved to be there ,
but a bit of a long haul from Devon.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

Define high quality. Film or digital, high ISO will never have the same quality as low ISO but the former enables images to be recorded in situations when low ISO users have long given up the game. Thus a high ISO image has to has to be evaluated differently to a low ISO one and the term high quality can be applied to both albeit using different parameters. Using K25 or its digital equivalent in the tunnels on Sunday would have been pointless and it's against this scenario that the high ISO images have to be judged.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

High quality wouldn't be being able to see huge graining. When the technology moves on that you can get images without the subject being hidden in among huge bits of grain then perhaps it'll be worthwhile looking at. I'm not sure I quite agree with your analysis regarding high and low ISO. I prefer to look at one picture and compare it with another. A photograph of a train taken at 12000ISO should be judged on the same merits as one taken at 100ISO but that's my opinion and I tend to look at most aspects of photography from a critical POV.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

    1. The more advanced sensors and processors aren't giving huge graining these days anyway and in the days of film a number of photographers made great use of grain, some using it almost to the extreme.
    2. I still say that the setting and context have to be taken in to consideration. Try taking a picture of an LUL150 train on the move after dark with ISO100 and then see the comparison with a high ISO equivalent of the same scene. I suppose if you're a fan of extreme blur then the ISO100 image may appeal.
