Likewise, Pity the Southern didn't ever consider a 3rd rail version.

I know it's standard LUL practice, but I always find it alien to see electrics that "whistle".

I see it only mentions Met No.1 for the May runs, does anyone know if 9466+one other is expected as originally mentioned?

I was told by an " insider" that 3 steam locos were to be used incl 9466.

given how much was spent on L1/44 I am not surprised LT are emphasising the loco that seems to becoming the iconic mascot of the Met along with Sarah S.

sounds like good fun. To be hauled to Rickmansworth in 2013 by an 0-4-4T seems miraculous

In the early days of Steam on the Met I had a great run behind 9466 and Met no.1. The thrash was amazing with each crew seemingly trying to outdo the other. A repeat would be nice.

Would have to be 9466 only to do that, Met 1 isn't cleared for NR operations.

I seem to recall that the CO/CP stock was delivered to Quainton Rd by LUL battery locos, under LUL running powers (this section of line was Metropolitan and Great Central Joint and although they no longer providied a service, they retained running powers)

How long ao was that? I wonder if London Underground still retain those running powers? There have been quite a lot or reorganisations in recent years. It would be handy if they do.

Steam between Aylesbury and Quainton has been very rare. I recall in 1992 an event to celebrate 100 years of railways at Aylesbury used 6024 and 5029 topping and tailing a series of trains between the two locations but other than that I can't think of any others.

Didn't know LUL did/still do (?) have running powers powers since their operations over this section ceased.

Do battery loco's have the correct gubbins or dispensation to run on NR ?, I notice they are the only Underground stock with yellow ends, that must be for a reason.

It was a long time ago. Doubt any such powers still exist. This was before TPWS and OTMR were even imagined

    Hi,

I have a scanned photo on my Flickr site taken by my Dad in 1981:
Battery Loco L38 and L18 19811010 Wendover taking coach to Quainton MTA slide | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
which has two battery locos, a brake-wagon and a single LT coach, so there must have been several trips to get the coaches there.

(This is the stock at Quainton last year: CO CP 20120805 Buckinghamshire Railway Centre | Flickr - Photo Sharing! )

    Cheers
    Alisdair

The devil will be in the detail.

It has been mentioned that Class 20 Diesel locomotive 20189 is also to be involved suitably re-painted. I think I am correct in saying that when Sarah Siddons has had runs in recent years in connection with the Rickmansworth etc festivals she has been top 'n' tail with either 20189 or 20227 or both. Back in 1995 Sarah Siddons was used on shuttles between Stanmore and Neasden hauling a mix of TC stock and Mark 2s in one direction and propelling in the other but presumably that is no longer possible.

I am sure some one who has followed 'Steam on the Met' closely can summarise past operations but I suspect two locomotives on the train is essential these days. Thus, are the steam loco(s) going to top 'n 'tail or will it be steam on ene end and electric/diesel on the other?

Always did have top and tail in Steam on the Met Days. Solved the problem of vac braked locos on air braked stock. Battery locos were used at first and then Sarah Siddons and the 20 arrived on the scene and were used instead.

Steam On The Met in 1989 was top and tailed with steam at the Chesham end and Sarah Siddons at the Watford end.

During the remaining SOTM events the trains mainly ran between Harrow & Amersham and Watford & Amersham. They were steam hauled with a Battery Electric, Sarah Siddons or 20227 at the Harrow/Watford end of each train to provide the braking. They were also used for shunting and hauling the train where necessary. The steam engines were changed at Amersham.

During the earlier SOTM events, at Harrow and Watford the Battery Electric/Sarah Siddons/20227 would shunt the train out the station to release the steam engine. For the later SOTM events, the train would stop outside Watford. The steam engine would go into a siding and the Battery Electric/Sarah Siddons/20227 would bring the train into Watford.

I don't know whether anyone has mentioned it but the Saturday of the Steam on the Met event is the same day as the Champions League final is being held at Wembley stadium. Could make for a busy trip home for those relying on the Metropolitan Line.
