Reading some threads here and on other forums set me wondering, it was my birthday yesterday, is there any way I can find out which if any locos were outshopped on the fateful day 18/3/51, and therefore would have been born on the same day as me? And whether any have been preserved like me

    Just curiosity really......

Nice idea - have a look on here http://www.railuk.info/steam/ I'm one day off sharing 82037's birthday.

Sadly that'd make me Swindon built though :faint2:

I have looked on this site but I can't seem to find locos built on a particular date. I have tried using search with my birth date which is 26/03/49.

Thanks for the link. And surely there's no no "sadly" about it, being Swindon-born makes you royalty!!:yo:

It's a pity that there seems to have been mostly "month-end" recording going on rather than actual date (well, a pity when you have "anorak" questions like mine, that is)

If you filter the site for the BR classes they all have full "birth dates" against them - you were close to being a a Brit I think - between 70002 & 4? 43106 is given as 10/04/1951.

Ok - after much filtering and sorting, you are one day off being 42087, a fine machine built in Brighton on 17 March 1951.

To young to share a birthday with an ex BR or even Industrial steam loco in this country but both Gresley and Collett died on my birthday in 1941 and 1952 respectively.

OK, here's what I found out about using that website to get what you need.

Step 1: In the left hand side, leave all the fields blank, but change the field "Order Data By" to "Build date". Click the "Search" button.

Step 2: This gives you a list of 28565 steam locos sorted by the date they were built, displayed 200 at a time. Unfortunately, this means you have about 140 pages to step through until you reach the early 1950's! But Step 3 gives you a quick way to get there.

Step 3: Press the "Next" button at the bottom of the page, let the page reload, then press the "Next" button again. Now look at the web address displayed in your browser's address bar. Find the bit that says "offset=400" and change the 400 to 27600. Find the bit that says "startrow=200" and change the 200 to 27400. Press the Return key. This will take you to a page that starts with loco number 8488 built 31/7/1952. Look further down that page and you will find the locos built in December 1952.

Now, unfortunately, you will find that the majority of December 1952 locos have a build date of 31st December! All through the database, you will find that the common practice seems to have been to report each loco's build date as the last day of the month in which it was outshopped.

You will see that in December 52, the 31st December 1952 is given as the completion date for all these locos, and more: 76000-76005 ( BR Standard Class 4), 78000-78003 (BR Standard Class 2MT), Pannier Tank 9488. This date of the 31st is clearly not "true" but just lists the locos completed during the month.

So I reckon that you can plausibly claim to share your birthday on the 4th December with first of class locos 76000 and 78000. :first:

One other thing to note about the site is how many locos have "unknown" listed in their build date, for example all the Bulleid Merchant Navy, West Country and Battle of Britain Classes. maybe someone can point to a site with more complete info?

I think that means it's your birthday tomorrow - so Many Happy Returns!

PS I see there are 4 Counties listed as 31/3/46, so you never know, you might share your actual birthday with one of them, as Swindon seem only ever to have reported the month-end as the build date :)

I'm too young. Best I could find was a Class 37 and a Class 14 on the diesel list and both of these have been scrapped. Doesn't look promising for me, really.

Yeah that's what I did Steve, but I just kept hitting next until I got to the 50's. All the standards had exact dates, so I was OK with that. What surprised me was how late in the day they were still building 94xx tanks - right into 1955. Feel free to Google for a better site - that's how I found the one we're all using on here.
