NCC U2 class?

    Can anyone confirm that this is a U2 class 4-4-0? If not then what is it?

    It looks like a U2, but I'm puzzled by the number which appears to be "4A".

    I'm pretty certain that it's a U1. A picture of a U1 and a U2 together is on page 18 of The LMS in Ireland by Mark Kennedy.

    Thanks, both. I agree, it's a U1. Wikipedia's Steam Locomotives of Ireland page shows the U1 as having NCC numbers 1-4. Not sure where the "A" suffix comes from, but other U1 photos also show an "A" suffix.

    Some railways had a duplicate list and locos on that would have a prefix or suffix to the number. Perhaps that's the case here.

    NCC No.4A was a U1 Originally No.4 Glenariff It was renumbered in May 1947 to make way for delivery of class WT 'Jeep' No.4

    4A was scrapped April 1949 with 575,417 miles behind it.
