You'll have to wait for pictures of my current project until it's finished and unveiled. It's embargoed until then.

Do you only have the mortal remains to work from, or are there archive sources such as drawings, diagram book diagrams etc.?

I saw this in August. It looked fantastic. You are making a wonderful job of the restoration.

It goes to show you that no hoper's can become a do-able project, but its got to survive long enough to be able to be taken on The problem i have with PH's views on "linear scrapyards" is that to someone who may not value vintage coaches the excuse of clearing away that old eye sore, allows them to break up something that in the future may be a gem. i can remember an Iron clad being broken up because the then management only saw MK1s as being of value. that a bulleid coach got restored at this time was only due to the owner insisting that he would not give up on his aim to have it running and stood up to the then person who did not want to put any resourse into it.

Mortal remains, the results of an archaeological dig (I kid you not!), much archive and historical images research but not much in the way of GA drawings. We do have some CAD visualisations and experience of two previous NSR vehicle restorations, amongst others.

This brake is about as bad as the WHHR buffet car ...

Well, if you don't want the genie to return, don't keep rubbing the lamp!

My objection to linear scrapyards is not so much regarding their existence as their visibility. If someone pays good money to ride and are vaguely promised good scenery to look out on they are hardly likely to be enchanted by having their views obstructed by tatty, obviously unusable, rolling stock. Tourist railways are businesses that are in competition with other tourism businesses.

So some projects, shown in this thread, are progressing. Whoopee! (No I am not being sarcastic, just genuinely delighted.) Now what is needed is covered accommodation to stop this work from premature deterioration.

That brochure mentions that a vintage carriage has already been sourced for use as the Goathland education coach. Is this something which is already on the line, or is it a new acquisition?

New acquisition, although which carriage is not final as I understand it.

Can't say I'm at all happy with artist's impression of the carriage shed. For all I know the design may be a condition of the planning permission or even of the sale, but unless the site is surrounded by a dirty great security fence that building will be neither use nor ornament.

just to throw fuel on the Genie's lamp I actually quite like interesting unrestored vehicles. Visible signs of progress as slowly they are restored will get me going back to the same railway year after year. I'd rather see unrestored pre-grouping carriages than no pre-grouping carriages and find a railway without visible projects a bit anodyne :Troll:

There is a short summary on my Ipernity album that covers most of the work (not yet completely up to date, which should be done soon)

Going back to the original message on the thread, it is a massive shame to see so many locos and other rolling stock going to waste.

I'm a 26 year old preservationist, I earn a respectable wage although I've still yet to get a mortgage, but one day i will certainly own a loco.

Trying to find out what is available and how much one "should" pay for certain items with respect to their condition is incredibly hard. I keep an eye out in the usual spots (Carriage exchange, wnxx, CAR services), even on the rolling stock threads here. It is nearly impossible to find any locos for sale. Naturally, money talks and you need to approach the right people, but even then how would I go about it when I can't even find a guideline price? It would be like going into a negotiation totally blind.

It is amazing how many engines change ownership by word of mouth, without ever appearing on the "open market". It does seem to be rather a closed shop these days, and many engines seem to sell to the same people.

Agreed, an engine changing hands is almost always newsworthy, even small industrials, which gives an indication of how rare an occurrence it is.

If I was looking at buying something that runs on 4ft 8 1/2 inches (and one day I might well be) I'd be much more inclined to buy some carriages or wagons. Wagons are great because they give *relatively* quick wins in terms of restoration, and you can of course ride in your own carriage, and depending on era some carriages can be incredibly pretty in themselves.
