Thanks for the video but oh dear that was some serious shoving going on at Byfleet and New Haw. I was surprised to see this one was only 10 coaches - I assume that was not due to lack of interest and that it is something to do with restrictions at Portsmouth Harbour mentioned before,

My pleasure. I wasn't surprised about the shovage at all, considered it lucky Scotsman 'opened up' as it came into the platform. Basingstoke was certainly the highlight hearing it get its train back underway as it was held right outside Basingstoke. Fingers crossed the perceived rain makes a difference for its trip on Wednesday

Good filming as ever but FS was just a headboard bracket, sadly. Also, a steam leak from somewhere was pretty audibly evident.

I popped out (by train) to Woking to see it return but my Woking jinx struck yet again. Having been more or less on time the whole day, the water stop at Brookwood over-ran badly and I had to catch my train back (using the North Downs line doesn't give many options!) before it passed, 15 down. BTW, the platform indicator at Woking showed the train as calling there from 1958-2000 but not to board this charter! Hey-ho...

Where exactly in the rules is that then, Can you provide a source for that claim?

In some of the videos from later in the day when 60103 was working a little she sounded a bit off beat. Chewing piston rings again? The departure from Brookwood at the end of this video sounds a bit odd.

Yes, a little off-kilter there. Do we know what the false start/moving up was about? As it was a ten coach train in a twelve coach platform it surely wasn't because a coach was off the end at the back. It left nearly a quarter of an hour late from Brookwood.

I think Scotsman has always sounded out of kilter and has never been as even as Scots or Jubilees whose exhausts are always much more even.

A rather sweeping statement! Odd things can happen to the valves on any loco.
As for FS, as exhaustively (sorry) discussed on other threads, Gresley valve gear can cause some irregularity of beats, but one chuff is much louder than the others on that departure from Brookwood, suggesting that some steam was going where it shouldn't be.

Chiltern have class 68's pushing sets to Marylebone with a DVT at the non powered end so there are clearly scenarios where it is allowed

Yes of course, and there are other trains on the network with all the power at the back but control from the front. The confusion about what is or isn't allowed is where a lot of the power is at the back under the control of a driver at the back. See https://www.national-preservation.c...s-including-the-use-of-diesels.757898/page-45 for further discussion.

That’s not the same thing at all, the driver is at the front in control of the locomotive at the back.

whilst he may not be providing power , will still have responsibility for the break as well as keeping enought steam into the cylinders for lubrication

Given the prevalence of working this way all TOC's must have a safe way of working

I see there is a First Class no catering option on the FS trip to Salisbury tomorrow and also Great Yarmouth on Friday. Not sure if this means a late addition of an extra coach or the trying of something new. I do not believe this has been an option on the other FS trips in this tranche.

Do you mean 1st class, no catering? Sort of Premium Standard.

Yes Ralph, thanks for picking up my typo. Yes it is a sort of Premium Standard, although I guess it depends if you reckon the seat or the catering is the driver in the product, for me it would be the seat and the extra room so referencing even a "Premium" Standard I would say undersells it.
No specific mention of the table for two supplement but I guess it will still apply as it is listed as First Class.

Tomorrows Salisbury trip timings are certainly a good day out for the passengers. Only one stop on each leg for water, 4 hours in Salisbury, late start, early finish. Certainly shows that even now you can have a decent day out on a steam trip without it leaving at silly o'clock and arriving back at nearly midnight.

Of course the city may be full of those returning from the Summer Solstice activities at Stonehenge in the morning. Especially as they said on the news that is where the buses are running from.

The Christmas programme of tours has appeared. Workings to Bath, Chester and Edinburgh etc return for 2023, along with a couple of new destinations/itineraries.

Looking to do the one way Ealing Broadway-Nottingham booked for Bahamas and the Chester-Paddington via Shrewsbury-Birmingham NS-Banbury and Reading two days later.
