You miss the point. S160s are meant to be completely unrefined and sound the way they do, pure machismo :)

I quite agree. The USATC grey was a nice change from the norm and reminiscent in a way of the British locos painted grey in WW1. Their loco, their choice but if black is the preferred colour then why not USATC black? An S160 at full thrash sounds great so I hope the modifications won't make it sound as though it's been castrated. :)

Is the S160 likely to be out working passenger trains any time soon ?

Maybe the bottom end on the MHR was knackered? 6046 rides very well

5197 was in Grey earlier on in it's ticket, have to say I wasn't a fan, looked unfinished like a coat of primer or something to me, as it had escaped the production line prematurely.

Is there any news available on 5820 working passenger trains this year ?

    Thanks

KWVR should hire in a 9f and an 8f for their next gala and have a heavy haulage full house.

Chances of that actually happening in 2013+, though? :(

Interesting to see how far the tables have turned in 45 years, when we think how keen the KWVR were to lose a BR image in the early days!

I fired Evening Star back then on the KWVR - don't recall any major issues with curve straightening given the flangeless centre drivers? But it was a long time ago .......

'Heavy haulage' might be a bit hackneyed. A better theme might be 'Military Power' with the S160, 'Austerities of the 2-10-0, 2-8-0 and 0-6-0st varieties, the Robinson 2-8-0, an 8f and a USA tank plus some others that might claim a place.More interesting than a line up of A4s (hides behind sofa) The KWVR might not be the best venue - GCR a possibility?

Agree, GCR like the G&WR is a lovely trip but a little on the flat side - at least KWVR needs a bit of regulator. Isnt the Robinson like all the austerity 2-10-0' s out of ticket now ? Theres the GWR / ROD mogul to add to that list too.

Meanwhile the Steampornzine says shes likely to be in traffic before christmas, hopefully on the santa special on the 22nd then...

I'm very interested to know just what form the "noise control" device fitted to 5820 is, as I was speaking with one of the volunteers on the KWVR oin Sunday, and he didn't know of any such device...
Also, is it just my perception, or do KWVR drivers use the whistle much more quietly these days? In my younger days I always remember a loud blast being given upon departure from stations, but these days most drivers seem to use a very restrained quick pop. I wondered if this may be due to complaints from Joseph Public about the noise? I may be totally wrong, but the KWVR does seem a quieter place these days to me!

    Richard.

The exhaust has been modified to address her reputation as a poor steamer when running in the past. As to how it will perform and what it will sound like, we shall hopefully find out very soon.

Could it also be as much the case that the S160s we have in recent memory - 5197 and 6046 - have, I believe, been essentially 'de-silenced' with some cylinder mods, therefore we can expect 5820 - minus these mods - to be quieter? Can't find any evidence to back this up, but I'm confident I've heard it somewhere!

Never had a bad day on it personally, was aware of problems when we tried Polish 'asbestosite' but then again NOTHING steamed on that!!! Now fitted with a Lempor arrangement ,which is just as noisy I am informed, although this was only light engine with taps shut, up the loop.

I stand corrected then. So presumably fitted for fuel economy - heading for Carlisle then? ;)
