    That sounds remarkably soon after the cessation of hostilities and presumably the arrival of many of the locos - did they really only work for such a short time?

    It's now moving on the webcam. The diesel I think is supplying the air for the brakes.

    She required the use of a genny during one of her visits to ELR when her compressor failed, which was mounted on the tender IIRC.

    At 17:30 6046 made its first moves under its own power since it arrived in the UK and also in preservation.

    The air pump should be fitted over the weekend, the shunter was therefore used to provide the brake. There are still a number of small jobs to finish before the loco enters traffic.

    World War 2 Locomotive Is A Step Closer To Running

    "In the fullness of time the locomotive will be prepared for use on Network Rail. This sees the possibility of through trains working from Cheddleton to Stoke on Trent and then onto the national network to such destinations as Chester, Llandudno and beyond."

    Didnt see that coming, how useful would it be for mainline running?

    Im sure the question about the NYMR's S160 being used for Whitby in future was brought up in another thread a while ago and opinion was it would stay Preserved Line only as it was unsuitable for Mainline use for a number of reasons, the only Mainline 2-8-0 48151 is specially balanced for higher speed work and even then limited to 50 and you have to say an 8F is a lot more refined than an S160.

    Sure someone hasn't got their wires crossed and Mainline actually means a short stretch in Stoke for train onto & off the CVR ?

    I'd have though a short trundle in to Stoke to pick up incoming tours would be the limit myself. That's how I read the article.

    In part I think that's down to the fact that it wasn't generally loved by crews at the NYMR (I don't think they ever really got the Polish engineering - comparable with the Romanian standards described elsewhere - bottomed out). The line speed down to Whitby is only 5mph faster and apart from the curves into the station throat it's all comparable to the NYMR itself.

    This is one NYMR footplate crew who thinks the NYMR's S160 is one of the most suitable and versatile locos they have. There are others. Unfortunately, there are also those who think it has no place on the Railway, which is a shame.

    Don't get me wrong, S160's are handy things for preserved lines with heavy grades and or larger loads, I just can't imagine it riding too well above 35-40, and doubt you'll get a path to Chester/Llandudno if it got approve for that low speed.

    How about the Jacobite? Go down a storm with American tourists to be hauled by one of their own. Air braking as well so versatile, good coal and water capacity, relatively low speed but high power required.

    Neither will those curves past Leekbrook on Cauldon lowe ;-) But no one's asking her to abandon the CVR and do the Jacobites
