Should we ask mods to move these last 3 posts into a new STR thread and continue discussion in a relevant thread?

The STR is a former standard gauge line so I don't think its gradients or curvature are particularly steep, nor are the likely train loads going to run to 10 coaches. and therefore I don't think it needs Garratts or NG15s even if they are available (which they may no longer be). I think the 0-6-2T+Ts would be ideal for them.

I am not sure just how true this is but if my maths are correct, then Haltwhistle is approximately about 400ft above sea level and Alston is approximately about 875ft which means a rise of 475ft over a 13.25 mile line or an average of 1 in 50 over 13 miles, if that is the case then we are looking at modernised L&BR 2-6-2T size locos to run this operation.

What with developmemts at Alston and the Slaggyford extension, it's probably about time the STR had it's own thread.

I believe the ruling gradient on the current section is about 1 in 70 although there are some short steeper transitions. Although train length is modest the coaching stock from Eastern Europe is quite heavy by 2' gauge standards. Barber is very comfortable with current loadings and the 30" wheels and 0-6-2 arrangement are also an advantage. Green Dragon should be in service next season and also has a TE slightly in excess of 6000 lbs. I have no direct experience but Naklo (currently out of service) was apparently on the limit of adhesion after the side tanks were removed. Finally there is the Matheran O&K 0-6-0 waiting in the wings that I believe is even larger.

You mean 1 in 150? Which should not be too taxing.
Imperial measures can be very confusing indeed. ;)

But a reasonable running time for over 13 miles takes some good speed on 2 ft. Definitely faster than any of the current locos are suitable for.

This is a smashing little railway but realistically does it have a chance of getting back over the bridges to Haltwhistle ?

My best guess? Eventually. They're a tenacious lot. As to when ...... get odds from a bookie! :)

Track bed is complete until the A69, so no reason it's not do-able. Some very big bridges on that section though!

Actually, further to that I gather the STR owns Lambley and Alston Arches viaducts - clear intent in that respect then
