I didn't just look, Itried to book... Could have had 8 seats in either Premiere Dining, First or Standard Class.. maybe I could have had more but i got bored then...

If something is listed as available in two places at the same time its a double booking!!!

So... how come Statesman Rail can name the loco (Leander) for the St Nicholas Express at the end November but not the Fellsmen in July and August. At the end of the day, this stream would die a death if Statesman simply gave a roster for July and August... they can for November! It's in their hands...

As to the 29th being full ?

    http://www.statesmanrail.com/fellsman290709.html

And perhaps if you tried West Coast Railways they might be able to help as to the loco allocation as they are in partnership with Statesman along with Northern Rail .

    Just an idea !

So come on Statesman, we know you're watching! End the thread instead of threatening legal action! Give up the roster... no ambiguity then.

    All looking pretty messy now...

What are you going on about?
    What is looking messy?
Where is the threat of legal action, unless it has been sent to you in a PM?

If Statesman want to run trips without declaring exactly which loco will be used until the day then that's there perogative, judging by the bookings it does not seem to be doing them any harm, only in your eyes it would seem.

Ah yes... been emailed by Statesman because of one of my posts... Nice outfit! Just because I have the temerity to ask a fair question and quote an extract of their reply...

At least Hardingham let you know what you were buying... shame is he wasn't at the top of his game at the end on the delivery but those who did get the product were happy... Actually that is sad because he had a great product. Will we ever know what went wrong?

Time? well it fills the space between the tasks when completed, and quite nice in the sun on a laptop...

Question remains, bearing in mind some of the previous posts about the difficulty in rostering a train... why can they roster a loco in November but not in July/August?

Even if Statesman Rail told you in writing that a certain loco was to haul a specific train there is always the rider that said loco is subject to availabilty and may be changed at short notice.
Don't forget all locos are subject to an FTR exam a few hours before it is due to run and if problems are found then the loco wont run full stop. So what would you do in that instance? Demand a refund?
Get real, most of us on here realise that in this industry nothing can be taken for granted especially the availability of locos.

Hey I'm with you all the way. I know that nothing is guaranteed in this life... and aged steam locos are precious and fragile creatures. Isn't that what makes us love them... living, breathing beasts. Oh dear, I sound like an extra from The Railway Children now!

Been there done that and accepted with total grace...

And to reiterate, I would hope that as many providers succeed... even Statesman. The world would be a sadder place..

I really dont see the problem. The trains are being worked by whatever is available from a pool of engines - a very sensible way of running regular trips whose passengers for the most part will not care whats pulling them as long as it is steam. What they would object to is the tour being booked for a particular engine months in advance, only for it to fail beforehand with no replacement available. If a substitute was found, no doubt enthusiasts would then complain they didnt get the engine advertised and ask for a refund. This is why, for regular trips aimed at the general public, engine pooling makes sense.

Of course, the very simple solution if engine pooling bothers you, is to book yourself on a tour where its specifically advertised - there are plenty of them around.
