Once 46229 has been streamlined should the NRM think about overhauling her for possible return to main line work or even just to go on preserved lines. It would be some think else to see her running up the West coast main line and pulling in to Crew railway station.

I think the loco will look just fine in the museum for the time being. But in another 15 or 20 years, who knows what might happen?

they won't restore it until 6223 in the final stage only s of its ticket. there's no need for 2 duchesss on the mainline, that would only be their disadvantage. however i wouln't be suprised to see 6223 and 6229 together at the mrc the week before sutherland finishes its ticket. that's not an insiders view, just how i would do it

I think Hamilton will be back at some point, but not just yet.

As Sidmouth mentioned the original proposals to streamline and run 46229 main line some years ago led to possible problems over gauging issues with the casing fitted. One fairly extreme, though possibly viable solution, suggested at that time was that new driving wheel tyres were going to have to be turned down almost to scrapping size to bring her within gauge. It may be that other less drastic solutions are currently possible to overcome any problems, as it was quite a time ago.

As far as I am aware, the casing that they are fitting is going to be within the national network gauge. I would not be suprised if Steam Railway start an appeal to steam the streamliner not long after it goes on display.

When the first VSOE proposal was mooted, I think we were permitted an extra 1" of height compared with current regulations. I have a vague memory that this change meant the A1SLT had to make some minor alterations to the fittings on Tornado to lose that extra 1".

I don't see the arguement that two Duchesses would be competition with one streamlined and out not. If they were both unstreamlined (I would say rebuilt but 6233 never was streamlined in the first place) then they would be competing. Even I would think they would be a perfect pairing for railtour operators, with one loco each way on a railtour a chance to sample a streamlined and unstreamlined example of the same class, would be a unique experience.

I would like to be able to agree with you, especially on the pairing of the two, but I don't feel this unique experience would fund two Duchesses on the main line for long, and when it has been repeated several times it ceases to be unique. My guess is that when 6233 comes off its 7th year it will get fast-tracked for another term, that gives some much needed time for the Friends of 229 ( and Danny ) to raise funds for a Hamilton overhaul, always presuming the NRM will agree to it and that the Friends are up for all the work and the politics. Seem to remember there has been some very interesting posts on the second item in the past. That little ( expensive ) lot should take us round to near the end of 6233s next ticket, and maybe then would be the right time to be thinking of a paired rail-tour, always presuming there still will be steam on the main line in, say, eight years time.

Is the unveiling at York or Tyseley?
If it's at York how is she getting back there, road or rail?

Won't the ultrasonic tests that are conducted to be towed on the mainline expired since her last ticket. Unless its the best kept secret of a full functioning bath tub.

Don't forget that it was towed to Tyseley after the last Crewe Works open weekend, so the ultrasonic tests that were carried out may still be valid. Gauging on the other hand...

Wasn't her streamlining designed to fit within the loading gauge?

It was, but NR now require all 'new' main line locos to be fully measured (laser scanned?) before being allowed out on the Network. This was as a result of 6233 striking a bridge on the SSE tours a couple of years back.

    Dan

Shame Network Rail don't laser scan their own maintenance work to ensure that it and their contractors are compliant

Thats definatley the other side of that coin, especially regarding 6233's inccident.
