Oh dear... Would be more believable if they could distinguish between trap and catch points, for starters.

    As for this paragraph:

Surprised they didn't go on "Was it George Stephenson for inventing railways in the first place? [sic]. Was it the Reverend Awdry for enthusing a generation about steam railways? Was it HJ Ivatt for not adding reversing sensors and rear facing video cameras to his loco to check for points set the wrong way?"

In other words, "like everyone else on the Internet, we haven't got a bastard clue about what really happened, but we're going to churn out 500 words anyway..."

A couple of observations, for what they're worth:

A signal was passed at danger.

The long whistle would suggest that the driver had been given permission to pass it and would be to communicate that fact to the guard and any other railwayman observing the move.

The trap points functioned as they were designed to do.

The locomotive crew did not appear to be looking out, checking the road. It is difficult to understand why they proceeded if they were. That is for them to explain.

Thank God that wasn't me. I would like to think that it couldn't have been, but I don't wish to tempt fate.

I hope all persons involved, whether deemed culpable in some way, or not, recover from the experience. Likewise the GCR.

    Regards,

    John
