What we don't seem to know yet is exactly what has happened to 34067. There is a lot of talk about cylinder problems, even a hotbox was mentioned initially. Whatever it is, it seemed to get on to the WSR under its own power off the main line.

Years ago I understand Shell changed the spec on Valvata and this caused the odd nasty surprise. If you read much about locomotive failures the use of incorrect specification lubricant - manufacturer's error or serious gaff on the part of railway staff - is a not insignificant cause. Mind you it doesn't help that locomotive lubrication systems are frequently inadequate. Hope the damage is not too drastic though

Have seen reports elsewhere that Tangers was leaking steam profusely at Fairwater before limping onto WSR - she is now well on way back to Carnforth now behind 33207 - ta various!

The almost disasterous seizing up of part of the motion on German Pacific 012 100-4 a few years ago was eventually put down to a lubricant problem I was subsequntly told. "Modern" lubricant being used instead of one known to be suitable was what the other members of the Group that ran the loco told me. The loco was close to being derailed and part of the motion was so badly bent it had to be cut off before the loco could be moved from the main line it failed on.

In steam with the outside rods on, so unless they've had the oil bath to bits and dropped the middle rod (which is highly unlikely and probably not practical - all sorts of balancing issues too I'd think) it shouldn't be too bad hopefully.

On a scale of very difficult to utterly fecking difficult, removing the centre rod without a pit is right off the scale so our engineers tell me. Moving slightly off topic, middle rod failures on a Spamcan on the road were unheard of - no doubt someone will now prove me wrong :)

I only mentioned the middle rod as there was reference somewhere to middle cylinder problems - not suggesting any problem with the rod itself (or big end) before the rumour mill goes into full forward gear! ;)

Tha cannot beat Uncle Tom Gradeley's Yorkshire Pudding Steam Oil :)

Were 45231's problems caused by lubrication issues?

I've seen many locomotives with their wheels looking just like that though.

Agreed, nothing unusual. Often associated with a leaking piston rod gland.

Looking at my video of the ACE again it sounds like 34067 is making a strange squeaking noise as she passes:

An early sign of the problem perhaps............

Edit: Seen a comment elsewhere that "34067 has a right-hand cylinder liner problem".

Looks like Tangmere is penciled in for a LE move from Carnforth to Southall next Saturday (1st Oct). Presumably she is fit again.
