Why Oh dear? For many years after nationalisation it was possible to see the outline on many locos of the Big Four markings under the BR livery. On one trip to Swindon I saw a loco tender in the scrap line and several layers of paint had peeled away to reveal ROD lettering. I suspect there wasn't time to rub them all down to bare metal and start afresh. Same probably applies to 4492.

Looking forward to seeing Tornado in its new outfit. What's going on with the number? Seems a bit of an identity crisis going on at the moment!

Interesting to note that the A1 trust are now using the term "replica" to describe their loco!

    Friday, 22 April 2011 17:29
The book that every new owner of a Peppercorn A1 should have in the glove compartment.... or maybe a tender locker! This is a Haynes Manual with a difference. Published in association with The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, it explains the construction, operation and maintenance of 60163 Tornado. The book explains how No. 60163 was based on the LNER Peppercorn Class A1 design, of which 49 were originally built but eventually all scrapped, and how Tornado is a magnificent and fully operational replica that is totally faithful to the original Peppercorn A1s in all respects except for modernisation to suit today’s safety requirements

I think it's just a cut and paste from the Haynes manual - everything else is "next in line" ;) why change the party line now? :)

Besides, she's six of one, half a dozen of the other in any event. Just "Tornado" as far as I'm concerned.

Can't say I like the word 'replica'. My Oxford dictionary defines it as a 'duplicate'. If 60163 is a 'replica', then it follows that 60115 to 60162 were also 'replicas' of 60114.

I tend to the view that if something is built to the original drawings (even allowing for later modifications) it is the original.

Putting it in aircraft terms and insisting on the word 'replica', the only genuine Spitfires would be those constructed by Vickers-Supermarine, and the majority built elsewhere were merely 'replicas' and thus not proper Spitfires.

The latest issue of steam railway as more information on the mods to Tornado's boiler, and also a interesting article on page 72 about how hard it as been worked compared to the originals.

Getting back to locos, J72 class 69023 "Joem" was a new build of circa 1950 to an original 1898 design. We don't hear of that one being referred to as a 'replica', do we?

Tell you what do us all a favour and leave this thread alone, you obviously have an axe to grind, and using trust releases and picking up on any references that suit your means, is now making you look like an idiot.

I am wary to mention a certain subject which does get some people animated, but...
I seem to remember that some time ago we were told Tornado would spend some time in blue livery at some point. Has this been ditched, or will this be coming along after a few years in brunswick green?
