Quite! From the age of 10 I and many others wandered about working steam sheds, crossed active running lines (including 3rd rail) and travelled unaccompanied for hundreds of miles without ever feeling "at risk" or anyone being particularly concerned.

I'd second that. Wandering around sheds every weekend and trips to London, from Leeds, at age 12 was of no concern to me or parents. There was no danger because common sense ruled. However, I did take the Father-in-law to Bickershaw Colliery in the 70's and was taken aback by his lack of awareness as to what was going on around him!

You still can in Poland, wander around unquestioned around the shed, view Green diesels and Electrics, see the occasional dumped steam locomotive. If you introduce yourself to the shed master at some sheds (Bialystok, Bydgoszcz, Chojnice as some examples) waving a copy of a railway mag, and 10zl (about £2) they'll give you an ins and outs tour of the shed, and a cab ride in one or two of the locomotives... How it used to be in the UK upto a decade ago.

I remember in my first chemistry lesson, we were asked to formulate the laboratory rules, and I was first with my hand up to suggest "use common sense at all times" - I got a pitying look from the teacher and told "if it was common sense, we wouldn't need rules" - and it didn't make the list!

Sadly, these days, "ambulance chasing" sc***ag lawyers and a population whose minds and ability to think are ever more turned to pulp by over exposure to certain media and programmes produced by Simon Cowell means that anyone relying upon their fellow human being to have "common sense" a brave man (woman or other) indeed! You tell some-one who has just tripped over that they "should have looked where they are going" and you probably double the compensation payout and possibly invalidate your PL insurance cover! That is assuming you insurers don't go bust and leave you carrying the whole can and bill!

Regarding the Trust's merchandise a second, I made a review for the Railroad Tornado recently (those on RMweb will be groaning now!), and whilst I think it was a great model overall, and a terrific price for what is a quality mechanism, with a bodyshell in the detail stakes somewhere between railroad and super detail, I felt the simplified livery of the apple green didn't really do it for me.

So I did this to mine:

Appropriate transfers and electric lighting brackets to finish. Regardless of the livery, for a model priced in the £70 mark, it really is a lot of model and captures the loco very well. The 3 pole motor with flywheel is exceptionally smooth running. The special edition apple green one though - that's another kettle of fish. Seen the one in Hornby Magazine recently - looked phenomenal!

Anybody tracked down the Tornado Haynes Manual yet. I saw Amazon had it in stock but I've not seen one yet.

I forgot got to say in shops. It was up on the A1 Trust website shop but it seems to have disappeared now. Given the fact that most of my local bookshops never got Tornado 21st Century Steam in (but did get the pocket book that was released around Christmas time) I don't think I'll see it except at the Bluebell. Then again I don't have the money to buy it.

I must admit to a little humour about a Haynes Manual being released and after the loco has been having repairs.

But at least she's running and hopefully there won't be any problems like that again.

Not much luck for Haywards Heath then. WH Smiths barely has any transport books and Waterstones doesn't even have a transport section anymore. I did check Crawley earlier but not in one of the Waterstones ot their WH Smiths. Brighton may though.

If you dont have £19-99 spare but want to buy a new copy of said Haynes manual at a discount have a look at Amazon.

...and yes, I appreciate that does not benefit the A1 Trust, before anyone points it out.
