I'm sure Martin didn't mean that in that respect Ben, it's just you jumping to the conclusion that some of us have this aversion to polished copper and brass...

But on second thoughts perhaps he did mean it that way... :peep:

Can't if find enough work on the ECML, instead of going to Devon and spoiling the look of the Torbay Express. Its not that its a bad engine it just wrong.

What's wrong, why shouldn't Tornado, like any other main line loco, run all over the country. Recently we have had a Castle over Shap and the S&C, an 8F doing the rounds down south, Princess Elizabeth doing the Shakespears, etc.
No, like it or lump it Tornado, like any other loco, is going to go where the work is and not be confined to one area just because it doesn't quite fit in, in a different region.

I think all her supporters in the south have the right to see what they donated towards as well.

Don't get me wrong its a nice loco, just like the majority of the other regular steam trips, Jacobite, Shakespeare, Fellsman, Waverley etc etc some attempt should be made to have the correct type of motive power on the front. Be much better once 6024 is back in charge. Afterall is it not re-creating a bit of WR nostalgia, hence the name 'Torbay Express'.

Well in terms of the South it would be nice to see Tornado in the South East. But yeah Tornado should be able to run where she likes and where the A1 Trust decide. Also considering a lot of 60163's ECML runs were due to be run by WCRC she has to get work somewhere.

Surely it's more about what's available to pull the train in this day and age...?

In answer to ben, it was said tongue in cheek, i dont have a problem with any GW locos, or any others from what ever region ,After all in 2011 can we just be pleased that you can still enjoy the spectical of an engine working on the main line ? .
After all after 1969 if you had said to someone that in 40 years time not only would you still get steam, but it would be able to run anywhere that it would fit they would have called you mad, or that a scrap yard would not be cutting its engines up as quick as possible, that some would return to the main line ,or in tornados case that it would be newly built it would have had them calling out the loony van to take you away

Stop being a so and so trainspotter and try understanding a businessman's view! - its the money wot makes the wheels go round.

If that means Class 8 power to run a path on the GW main line, the market is somewhat limited at the moment - and it's Joe Public who's paying it. As he doesn't give a monkey's what's on the front provided it has a fire at one end, just be thankful that your hobby is being satisfied as a result.

Can't believe that people moan about what we have now on the main line.

Remember the 70's, at first no main line steam and then at the end of the ban only a few routes available with a small pool of loco's.

Now look at what we have, just be thankful and enjoy it while you can.

    Cheers Dave

Would those moaning about Tornado rather have a "Western Region" Diesel on the front then? We are still very lucky to have steam hauled tours at all. Make the most of ML steam while we still have it.

Wasn't it Danny Hopkins (formerly of Steam Railway and known as Leander's Shovel here) who set this thread up and was one of the people behind the Top Gear run with Tornado.

National Preservation was the crucible for the idea of that race. Shame we're not mentioned anywhere.

Agree with you Mike to a significant degree. For my own steam trips I just wait for the right combination to turn up, as it does from time to time.

That's given me a good day out to Swanage with Tangmere on June 30th.

And an outstanding day out on 9th July with Tangmere again.

But of course I do accept all our main line fleet have to earn their keep.

So I accept that my own preferences may have long gaps in between and that foreign locos will appear on "my" patch. For others to enjoy. As they seem to do in significant numbers.
