At risk of raking over old ground I believe that WC and 61264's owners had a tiff a few years ago but they seem to have sorted their differnces out now though.

I am tempted by this one, but dubious whether it will actually run without a diesel. If it does, it will be one of very few such this month.

Now there's an optimist. Have you not worked out yet that generally, Tornado doesn't 'do' diesel and has never set fire to anything, as far as I can recall?

The chance of lineside fires at present is very limited. On the other hand
the chance of lineside flooding is becoming more of a problem. <BJ>

Irrespective of Tornado's history, the critical issue is NR's assessment of the risk, and we won't know their decision until very shortly before the trip, or possibly not even until the day. Some people on here have adopted the policy of not booking anything until there's a reasonable certainty of steam without diesel.

This summer, that ought not to be the case. Tony Streeter's column in the latest Beano explains what they're doing instead. There should be at least 4 days advanced notice. Still not great, I know, but better than last year. Do you actually have any examples of tours this summer where passengers have not known what they were going to get until the day the train ran?

Some friends of mine booked on the Cath EX on 2nd August as it was picking up from their home town of Arlesey. I warned them to expect diesel so they called SD to be told "we are still hoping for steam". They tell me that diesel was only confirmed to them when they saw it on the front of the train.

Well if they were told on either the Thursday or the Friday before the trip that "we are still hoping for steam" then somewhere in the system there was something seriously adrift with communication.

The locomotive owners knew on July 30th - i.e. the Wednesday - that Bittern was not needed on the Saturday. (Read their Facebook page.) This means that West Coast also knew as they would have been told by NR and then passed that on to the loco owners. Logically, they should also have told Steam Dreams.

This all may not have affected your friends' decision to travel but if they are saying that the implication was given on Thurs/Frid that steam was still a possibility then perhaps they should have a polite word with SD?

I haven't personally, but haven't some been reported on this forum besides the one just cited by Spamcan81? Even if NR tells the train operator (West Coast or whoever) 4 days beforehand, the information doesn't always get via the tour promoter's office through to the travellers.

With the recent weather there shouldn't be a problem for the Tornado trip on 25th. But I can't find it on RTT yet.

Has this thread lost 150 odd pages ?

Is it likely that 60163 will be gunning for the (formerly known as) vsoe gig when clan line bows out ? although it would mean yet again a limited presence oop north and a busy season for the southern based support crew, it would make commercial sense.

No it would appear somebody decided to start a new thread so there were two threads running. I have merged them together so there is now only one and everything is in the same place ;)

Clan Line will be withdrawn for overhaul next spring, and the MNLPS will be arranging replacements while she's out of action, as they did in 2001-6. I suppose any class 7 or 8 loco that is gauged for the normal BP routes and is operated by DBS is in the frame. I'm sure the A1SLT will bid for some of that work, but I doubt they'd want to take on all of it. Maybe 2 or 3 locos will share the duties during the year?

Just think - this is the first time a Peppercorn A1 and a Gresley P2 have ever been seen alongside each other in history. What a moment encapsulated in that photograph.

And just like BR, it would be the 3rd time in a decade the boiler will be placed into the frames :)

I must admit Im looking forward to see 2007, Tornado's a big engine but a P2 must be huge! I support 82045 to me thats the ideal engine for a preserved line. But for trying to get kids to want to be engine drivers again..... 2007 most defintley is the Daddy.

The boiler will be the same size and the total wheelbase can't be much different. Look at the pictures: the front end is very different, but from the third axle backwards they look very similar apart from the connecting rods and valve gear.
