I believe the Severn Valley Railway got a very good deal on a second hand one for Bridgnorth and it was still a significant amount of £. The SVR will be shifting stuff around a lot more than the A1 Trust will be, no doubt they are useful bits of kit though.

Better still, enter into the spirit of things and acquire a breakdown crane (preferably steam!).

Although the sort that you can hire might have trouble lifting something inside the building. Mobile cranes and overhead cranes serve different purposes.

Overhead cranes are very useful but to be of practical value need a building much higher than they have. Height significantly adds to building costs.

Most of the normal lifting jobs such as wheels out etc, can be done using jacks, boiler lifts are not that often, and with a wide firebox, most jobs can be tackled with the boiler in the frames, so your only really talking at the beginning of an overhaul, to lift the boiler out, and when putting it back in after overhaul, a large road crane especially if you have a large hard standing, can do this easier than having to use an overhead crane, and cost a lot less.

It has been reported that the set of flue tubes supplied to replace those installed in Germany as part of the overhaul have, in turn, been condemned by the inspection authority. Set No.3 now on the way ….

If true that's a tragedy, had they been fitted, or failed on pre installation inspection???

Presumably they were ordered to a standard and weren’t supplied to that standard. For those who have to order such things it would be useful to know who has failed in that supply chain. I guess that we won’t get to know where the weakest link is, though, due to reasons of confidentiality.

Guessing the chances of those Aberdonians running next month are quite low. They've already been rescheduled from last summer... Can't be helped but still a frustration.

Not a cheap shot, at all. They seem to have been let down by suppliers quite a lot recently. They aren't unique, read Pete Briddon's blog and then tell yourself that the customer is king!

So , where did the trust source them from ? I don't recall other groups having these issues, I wonder were they sourced from the same firm that supplied the original sets of tubes, Tornado must have been retubed before during the last boiler cycle, and I would have thought a known supplier to be more dependable.

What rotten luck. 2007 might be out of the blocks before Tornado at this rate. But, better to find a problem now than halfway down the ECML.

I wouldn't call that rotten luck but I know what you mean.

Can we assume that these replacement tubes were not sourced again from Germany and that this particular set came from somewhere in the UK?

The news of the problems with the tubes is disappointing to put it mildly. The chance of seeing Tornado at Aberdeen this year is now not great. Let’s hope when Tornado is back whether that be later this year or in early 2024 that it is better than ever. I can’t wait for potentially 2025 when the P2 could join Tornado on the Aberdonians as well as at Stockton Darlington 200.
