    What's wrong with fleet?
Standard collective noun for vehicles, I'd have thought.

It's not so much the charge, it's the fact that there are people who will pay it. I guess that if you own the loco then you let the price rise until people signal that it's too steep.

Just looked up and in 2005, we paid £200 at the East Lancs for one of Ian Riley's Black 5's, that was declared unfit on the day.

Step forward the team from 71000 who quickly got her ready for an unforgettable afternoon.

Morning was spend clearing the tubes of 40145, what a morning that was as well!!!

I believe it's called inflation, or is it capitalism? And who's to say what people should pay - you have seen the cost of coal, I trust?

Even an inflation calculator tells you that £200 is now £346. But that’s just a very basic model, and doesn’t take anything proper in to account.

Coal - Since Covid that’s now between £400-600 a ton. 2019 that was £80-120 a ton. In other words a 5x increment in the cost of this alone.

So even based on coal alone, your £200 day, should now be £1000.

The comparison i am trying to make is £200 then is with inflation worth @£400 now.
imponderables like coal, staff, maintenance are where the real increase is coming from.

They have one working steam loco of their own so sadly not much of a fleet.

I believe it’s on order and should be ready by the end of January. I would have thought it would be something that should have spares in stock and fire bars don’t last forever

I’m not au fait with their operations - I heard two other locos had suffered from burned out bars.

Could well be a result in the coal currently available to them. I'm aware of another locomotive at another railway (not sure if I'm allowed to say which or where so I won't) whose firebars became so warped through heat that the rear half of the grate fell into the ashpan (mercifully not while there was a fire in the box). Some of the coal available at the moment burns very hot and if you close the dampers with a white hot box there's nowhere for that heat to go so it can cause the firebars to warp

 Coal, the UK is sitting on top of BILLIONS of tonnes of coal reserves............and we are importing the stuff, most of the imported stuff is of 'dubious quality'.
And those billions are before we get to lignite.
Now in my eyes that doesn't make a lot of sense.

That's they green agenda that gets shoved down our throats at every opportunity for you.
Let others who make the real damage do something (India and China), before our inconsequential efforts are lauded by all.
Our efforts are like farting in a spacesuit, and saying you can smell nothing....

A post on the NVR Facebook site in response to an enquiry into the failure says that there "is an issue with a safety valve" on 60163:

"I read that Tornado has failed, what was the failure and what will be replacing it on the trips it were meant to take?

    Nene Valley Railway:
The locomotive is unavailable due to an issue with a safety valve, Danish 656 will be covering the duties"

Never shut the dampers on a hot fire if the regulator is shut. That's a basic rule for any footplateman. Even if the firebars survive, it's a sure way to make clinker.

Quite, but it seems not everybody has been following that basic rule...
