Heard about Tornado's first proper outing on the BBC news earlier in the week....was pleased to hear them report that it went well rather than broke down [-o<

Looking at the pics it looks absolutely fabulous but a small question from a novice...what is going on with the lettering on the tender? 8-[

For a while after nationalisation locos were turned out in Big Four company liveries but with BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering on the tender. Once a corporate image was decided upon these liveries were replaced by BR colours and the BR lettering replaced by the "cycling lion." I hope this answers your question if indeed that was the question you were asking.

This won't be an exhaustive list by any means but the following have carried the full BR lettering at some stage :
    6960, 34081, 43924, 44932, M5337 (45337), 65462, 68088 and the others I haven't thought of.

On the move, air hits the front of the smokebox and is forced out sideways. This creates a vacuum further back on the smokebox and boiler barrel. Air (with smoke) adjacent rushes in to fill the vacuum - hence the driver's vision is obscured. The same effect can be seen on lorries with curtain-side bodies or trailers. With a lower air pressure on the outside due to the flat front of the body forcing it sideways, the normal air pressure inside the body forces the curtain outwards at the front.

A1/A2 type smoke deflectors are not very effective for two reasons. Firstly, they don't extend forward enough of the smokebox front to capture the sideways forced air, and secondly, the deflectors are too close to the smokebox to let the air pass backwards. The German 'Witte' type deflectors as fitted to the A3s solve both these shortcomings and are much more effective. My understanding was that 60163 was to be an A1 Mk. II with the (admittedly few) shortcoming of the originals eliminated, so I am surprised the German type weren't included in the specification from the beginning.

Regarding heights of numbers and lettering, I merely posed a question. As those slagging me off for asking obvoiusly don't have an answer to it, why do they bother posting unnecessary comment? #-o

    Hi eightpot,
Ignore the morons who couldn't answer your question, they're not worth the CPU cycles. One possible explanation is that as the coal and water in the tender is used up, it will ride a bit higher on the springs and thus the tender lettering will not always be on the same alignment.

You know there's a dividing line on this forum - those who are twice the age of the others!

when I see a "railway enthusiast" write "I have never seen British Railways on a tender before" I squirm with barely concealed disgust.

Firstly - where have they been? and second - how can an "enthusiast" not be better informed??

Then again you have to remember - these people have been taught how to pass SATS etc, not how to inform themselves independently, when the easiest way to do it is to ask the Internet - where of course all the "accurate" answers are to be found - aren't they??

Maybe age (i.e. eyesight) is a problem then, as he clearly wrote "a small question from a novice", and appears to have made no mention of being an enthusiast at all.

Too harsh Frank. We all have to learn sometime and it was a fair question from a newcomer to our hobby. Even us oldies don't know it all - although some no doubt think they do :-D - and the internet is as good a place to ask questions/do research as any. Surely it is up to those who have the knowledge impart it to those who don't rather than berate them for being "not better informed." When I think back to my early days as a spotter I cringe at some of the things I thought I knew - such as taking my combined volume to Ireland in 1964 as I assumed BR locos went over on the ferry to continue their journey the other side of the Irish Sea. Didn't even know the gauge was different let alone Ireland having its own railway company.

My word, next they'll be saying they don't know the differences between a 4073-92 series Castle and a 4093-5011 one!

    It's just not cricket!

That's yet another example of the A1 Trust's slick marketing campaign. Well done guys!

Hmm, I'm sure you're right. Does the 3822 Mob have a similarly appropriate phone number? If so, it's buried deep on the Didcot web site 'cos I can't find it!

It has been suggested to me that the fellow who did the lettering was taller than the one who did the numbers............
