This section needs some firelighter! The lack of railway stories from railway fans is shocking! Shocking I say! :smt002

Some years ago, I was up near Blea Moor tunnel waiting for a steam train. I saw a photographer walk down to the track, which in itself is a bit dodgy due to the cutting, and then proceed to walk into the tunnel 8-[. I didn't see him again and as it happens the steam didn't make it there as it had failed. Was it a real man? A ghost? Is he still in there?

I think it was a member of NP who was trying to get away from some of the downright rude self appointed experts on this forum!

Reminds me of the story on the sign at Ribblehead Viaduct, I think its on there anyway. About the worker who was one night on top of one of the pillars during the construction of the viaduct, and was knocked into the middle of the pillar by the wind. He survived and called for help but nobody heard him and the pillar was filled with stones with him at the bottom calling for help.

Apparently at night you can still hear him calling for help.

Spooky, whether its true or not.

Wasn't it a horse and cart that fell into one of the pillars and they just kept filling rather than trying to get it out?

There is a local myth that the four 'pavillion' type structure either end of the Ouse Valley viaduct are haunted

If you are walking between the pillars and you hear a hollow knocking sound, i would run like hell!
Mind you it could be David Wilcox trying to get his next master shot.

My favourite ghost story is one by the late George Horner, signalman of the S&C regarding footprints, or rather the lack of them, in the snow at Selside on the S&C (Me, on about the S&C for a change :smt002). That's a spine tingler.

It's not unheard of for accidents to occur during contruction of structures. The old Severn Bridge has two workers buried in the bottom of it after an accident during a concrete pour.

Here in Italy it's not unkown for other 'additions' to be made during bridge building.

Down near Naples there is an unused section of motorway that is now being knocked down. After the fourth body had been recovered police began to suspect that these might be a bit more than construction accidents.

That is the strangest thing i've ever seen, now way could steam arrange itself in such a perfect outline like that, i've heard people say Bullieds are cursed but that's taking the biscuit!.

The S&C story i've heard of was the signalman in Blea Moor box getting a call from a lineside phone and hearing nothing but breathing on the other end, it was in the middle of the night, hours after the track gang had booked off and some 30 mins since the last freight....

Think it may have been in the beano if memories correct.

Simon, what was the shutter setting when you took that pic of Tangmere? I suspect you have probably caught a glimpse of the fireman shovelling.

Must admit, is spooky and made me "oooh" at it when I saw the being.

While we are on the subject, anyone here seen any beings from beyond the grave? I am told that as a very young child I used to see someone, a man apparently. My Gran, who is rather spiritual, suspects it was my great Grandfather, her father-in-law.
I also wonder who is there that I cannot see when my cats eyes suddenly follow 'nothing' across the room.
