There was a lot of mismatching of rods that were acquired from Barry, with or without locos attached. It's entirely possible that someone's loco was only missing one, they had one made, only to subsequently be offered an original, perhaps the actual one from their loco, thus making the new one surplus to requirements.

Well as long as it didn't "fall of the back of an engine", something I have heard had never been known to happen in the case of parts sourced from Barry...

    Modest progress continues:

    See http://www.4253.co.uk/Whats_Happening_Now/

The order of riveting up the side tanks appears to be a challenge. Just how did they do it?

Maybe Swindon paid a small boy who climbed out through the filler cap when the last section was completed ? Any suggestions?

On 7202 we started at with the floor, added the outside with baffles in place, the narrow part in the cab including top, then the back, then the top. The baffles we bolted in so in some cases removed one to make access easier. It doesn't need to be that small a boy, at 13stone and over 40 I did a lot of the riveting inside, were good ear and face protection when closing rivets above your head inside the tank!

Due to current pace of the 4253 project we have decided that latest weekly news will be published on:

    www.4253.co.uk/Whats_Happening_Now/

Our webmaster will try to change the page each week.

This weeks developments include major surgery on the rear of frames plus long awaited 5668 news.

Have you guys considered using something like a wordpress blog to publish updates? It's free, easy to use, and avoids losing information by having to change an existing page (I love to trawl back through project threads and more pics are always better).

Great progress, and good to see 5668 is going to join her!

Poor 5668 looks to be in a pretty bad state in those pictures. Still, I've been following the impressive progress with 4253, and I've no doubt that once this engine is up and running, a similar transformation can be achieved to your second engine, even though this won't be for several years. Best wishes, thanks for the updates and keep up the good work!

Agreed! Always good to see one of these powerful 2-8-0Ts coming back to life and, in time, 5668 too. This perhaps illustrates the argument that some ex-Barry locos, left to continue rusting away long after their initial rescue, can be restored to working order. It costs of course but this just shows what a well-organised team can do. Well done folks!

After a long silence and several false starts out of Blaenvon, we can now announce that 5668 has eventually reached KESR metals.

Unfortunately due to technical difficulties the engine will not be in steam for a few weeks yet.

Please see www.4253.co.uk for future news.
