Looking at that cat, the running costs would be prohibitive!

Or Rottweiler even. I've owned two and they were big softies. Get a Jack Russell, they can be vicious little beggars.

About 40 posts ago, someone said this thread had gone a bit off-topic. Really?

We're supposed to be discussing the appearance (or not) of some mythical chuffing machine which may (or may not) have a cloaking device and may have been glimpsed with steam coming out of it.

Anyone got any news? ... about Galatea I mean.

Does it still have half a wheelset?

Because when I saw it last in Barry it was missing a bit.

I think it's got all six wheels now. Otherwise they'd have to downgrade it's power classification to 5.5P5F ;)

Apart from the axed wheel, was Galatea in particularly bad shape when she left Barry? Was her boiler also shot, mechanically buggered or was it simply the wheels which condemmed her to basket case status?

I suspect it's been stripped of it's bits, then rebuilt with bits of others etc etc..
In short though.. it's a lucky one.

I imagine all three of irwellsteam's points were valid. The wheelset was cut at Barry as far as I recall, when the loco derailed during a shunting move. I do recall a while ago seeing some images of the firebox under repair, I think they were taken during an open day at Carnforth, and at a minimum the firebox looked to be getting new half-sides, and no doubt much other work was necessary. Ian Riley produceed the new coupled wheelset I think.

Maybe my memory is wrong on this, but whilst bought to provide a spare boiler for 45690, didn't it turn out that the 45699 unit and the 45690 unit were not readily interchangeable? Something to do with firebox length?

Anyway, the S & C awaits, Mr Smith has interesting double-headed possibilities. Just flick through some of Eric Treacy's images taken on the S & C.

I am sure someone has confirmed that parts from 45662 "Alberta" live on with 45699. Motion parts possibly.

Thirty years ago this week since No 1000 piloted 5690 over the S&C - who would have thought then that we would still be going over Ais Gill with steam and with far more variety and frequency than we could possibly have dreamed of back then. It is easy to forget how lucky we are right now.

Now that would be something. Have the NRM ever said what sort of a state 1000 is in, hopefully it will be back in steam one day.

As a youngster, a Jubilee or Black 5 piloted by a Compound, latterly Millhouses' 40907, was the classic sight on the Midland expresses up to Sheffield, before the class 7 engines displaced from the West Coast were drafted in.

For now though, will just be happy to see 45699 back. A regular past me on the heavy cross-country services when shedded at Bristol Barrow Rd.

Slight confusion there, 45690 and 45699 are both 'long firebox' or 'sloping throatplate' versions, if one of these boilers were to be fitted to say Kolhapur then chassis mods would be necessary.

Yep, thats fair enough. There must have been another reason why Galatea was never actually dismantled for its component parts. As I said, just something in the far dark corner of my memory! Perhaps with hindsight the existing "Leander" boiler was/is in better relative condition.

Anyway, another "Jubilee" soon to be out and about, that suits me, and due credit to Mr Smith and WCRC for a major overhaul of a rusty wreck, as was 46115.
