Integrity and mesh size of the spark arrestor and quality of the coal are key issues, as are the damper and ashpan arrangements.

Also the 8F has to work harder to maintain the speeds required

I really think Carnforth need to bring in a locomotive from outside their facility for help on trips until Galatea is ready. Having the 8f on trains causing lineside fire's is not good. Having to cancel trips or have diesels pulling them when they are advertised for steam not good. 5305, 61994, 60009, Ian Riley Carnforth needs help

    As she's limited to 50, I wouldn't think she's working any harder at that speed than a Class 5 at 60 or a Class 7 at 75.

With you there spamcan, an 8f should be able to take any thing that a Black 5 can and is hardly being flogged at 50... But the smoking gun... erm embankment is there for all to see, the Cinders are flying off 48151 and that needs to be looked at.

Reciprocating parts would be going 6 per cent faster at 50 than a Black 5 at 60. I don't know if that's considered significant.

I once chased the 8f from Grange over Sands to Ravenglass and as I came to the end of the road near Silecroft I could not keep up on the long straight road and I was doing 70 plus MPH so this loco can and does more than the said limited 50 . I know this has nothing to do with Galatea by the way .

I'd be looking a cinders coming out of the ashpan rather than out of the chimney.

I do wonder, given in theory she's less likely to lose her feet than a six coupled loco, if there's the temptation to open her up a bit more if progress is somewhat less than desirable ?.

Careful what you are saying, the loco is limited to 50mph and such suggestions otherwise could land people in trouble such as yourself who has admitted breaking the speed limit, remember single Carriage 60 mph max, dual 70mph ( Van wise - unless in a car based van where you can knock 10 mph off those limits). I personally believe David could have a possible answer with the 8f just being worked harder! Anyway, if you wish to discuss this further, can i suggest a new topic so we can keep this one on track please (hint to save me having to split it lol!!!

hahaha spot on there!! perhaps the silence of their news & updates should be greeted by the silence of our wallets and cash! If they pay for playing with their toys with their own money they can keep as many secrets as they like - although we all know they will anyway

Would it not be better to make a separate thread for the 8F's on the mainline.

    Cheers Dave

I assume that you similarly expect Virgin Trains and Tesco to be as open with their company actions.

WCRC are a commercial company providing a service you choose to consume or not, I don't understand why there are these demands for commercial transparency above what any service would provide.

You don't like it, well don't consume. .. you have the power, use it.

My concern here would be that West Coast seem to be a rather predatory company and have something of a stranglehold on parts of the market - e.g vac brake only steam locos. It doesn't look to be a healthy situation from where I sit.

How is that predatory. .. did they force DBS to only operate air braked.

Having a single operator monopoly is not good for the market, but don't see how the blame for that can be laid at WCRC door.

DBS dont have any Vaccuum braked diesels.. kind of makes it hard to rescue / stock move a Vac Braked train. Though as I understand it... if the stock is air & vac, and the loco has at least a through air pipe they will run it.

Until Galatea is out on the mainline, I won't be as interested as into what Carnforth are up to. I'll just wait.
