A report in the latest Railway Herald implies that 45699 is stopped pending works attention which will be undertaken after 35018 has been completed. It goes on to say the only planned duties for 45699 are the Waverley trips.
Is there any corroboration to this news?

We reached this conclusion ourselves on the Hadrian thread. If this is based upon sound information, it merely confirms what we have already guessed- that 35018 is (rightfully considering the extra margin of power it will provide) taking priority at Carnforth. If that's the case, it can't be too long before it emerges, and work started on 45699.

lets hope so, there are many on here who wil be very interested when 35018 is first seen in steam at Carnforth, then when she takes an ECS , of course, she will be turned out as 34016

It is a shame if 45699 requires more than running maintenance given its most recent outings prompted observers to suggest the tuning up had raised performance levels.
Hopefully a specific issue has been identified and just needs a window to deal with once the 8P is done.
44932 seems to be in the throes of a boiler off repair as well so busy times for CRRES.
Good job 45690 is active once more.

Passing one Jubilee off as another is one thing but pretending that a MN is a WC is a bit harder!

    MN has:-
    Longer firebox
    Bigger cylinders
All 4 firebox feet are the same, where front & rear are different on WCs
    3 safety valves
    Rear ashpan dampers
35018s current tender is huge because it used to be self-weighing

Anyone think of any more visual clues?

Wrenn did it for years, even trying 1940s Southern Livery on the rebuilt example! :)

from a long way away, or a snatched shot over a fence, then to some a rebuilt Bulleid pacific would look like any other rebuilt Bulleid Pacific:) ok like many ,i can tell the difference after all 35018 has certain external arrangements of pipework that are unique, assuming that Carnforth has copied the originals.

If you were standing on a platform watching the approach of a rebuilt Bulleid Pacific, the trained eye could spot whether it was a MN or a WC/BB long before you could read the number. The boiler diameter of a MN is about four inches wider.

Ah but how many have that trained eye, very few I would guess.

Were they expecting these issues with 45699 to come up?

Should I state the obvious and say that they clearly have very different types of name plates? Runs and hides!

My question is whether the people telling us how easy it is to distinguish Bulleid Pacifics are the same folk who tell us all GWR 4-6-0s look the same?

    You mean they don't? ;)

Close up, a rebuilt MN and a rebuilt WC aren't too difficult to differentiate. But I suspect if one went out onto the mainline, un-numbered and un-named, and you just saw it go flashing past, you might struggle, though unless Carnforth also painted it in special paint that automatically fogged all photographic film, someone somewhere would capture a definitive distinguishing photo. Certainly I suspect much harder to distinguish at a fleeting glance than, say, a Castle and a King, or a Duchess and a Princess Royal.

Mind you, I'm not 100% convinced that Black 5s and Jubilees aren't actually the same ... :Saywhat:
