Depends, as long as Carnforth didn't charge for the 'loan ?' of the wheel pattern.

I wouldn't go quite so far as to say good as new but it is a well established procedure. If I remember correctly 4498/60007 has some metal stitching repairs though without leafing through a small mountain of Chime I cannot be sure of the nature of the repair - it appears to have given good service since it was quite some years ago. Scotsman's repaired cylinder had a reasonable life extension too. The great shame is that no way was found for a long term repair on Green Arrow.

Isn't Green Arrow's problem wastage rather than a crack though?

Thought the wheel pattern was Tyseleys?! Not Galateas? Cant remember tbh.

Anyway we have a very nice relationship with Westcoast, we have purchased items off them in the past, and always ask them for advice on things we are unsure of, and if they need a new cylinder (if its that bad of course), they can always contact Kevin West who is always happy to assist if he is able. Remember we are no longer the only groups to do poly pattern cylinders as Elliot Ness produced the CAD data for Betton Grange. Im also sure there are people from the A1 trust with experience also.

Also remember that while our project has done the poly pattern stuff we do pay for all the CAD work. So we couldnt actually produce the CAD data anyway. Only point Westcoast towards our CAD man.

You are correct Gavin, the wheel pattern came from Tyseley, courtesy of Bob Meanley. It had been made for the replacement wheels for Galatea during the time it was at Tyseley.

Also, the original Royal Scot and Patriots had the same cylinders, but the cylinders fitted to the Re-built Scots are different. The re-built Scots have a drum head smokebox instead of a wrapper smokebox as we have on The Unknown Warrior. The smokebox saddle is part of the Inside Cylinder casting. The cylinders are also of the later Stanier pattern with the Relief Valves on the Front and Hind Covers instead of under the bore as on the original Scots and Patriots. The valve Rod Crossheads are also mounted off the Hind Valve Cover instead of off the front of the Motion Bracket. If you look closely at Royal Scot it is possible to see where the original mounting has been cut off the Motion Bracket with a gas axe!

Still able to help if the call comes.

All of which supports what I think someone said in another thread here, that the rebuilding of the Scots with taper boilers actually left very little of the original locomotives. A bit like the "rebuilding" of Claughtons into Patriots.
