Last chance to see 5786 at work in G.W.R green this weekend at the South Devon Railway's Half-Price event.

On Monday morning the loco is to be stopped for repainting into black livery ready for the 40th Anniversary Gala event a couple of weeks later. The loco will also be turned prior to this event, so this weekend is also the last for a while to see the loco facing smokebox to Ashburton.

Thanks for that. Are there any plans to restore the cab roof to its correct GWR/BR(WR) style and remove the LT modfifications ?

No. We are pushing time to get everything ready for the gala as it is, so any extra work will have to wait, so it will be a basic paint job complete with cycling lion emblem. I'm sure the results will be worth the effort and we already have two photo charters booked with the loco, one with goods, and another with two ex GWR coaches, both painted in British Railways Carmine & Cream livery.

leave the LT bits...they are an important part of its history and are hardly intrusive....paint it maroon maybe one day?

What are the LT modifications on a pannier? I know that our 5764 apparently has these mods but to be honest I cannot tell the difference between its cab and 7714's which apparently doesn't... (other than the different type of top feed/injectors which differed between batches anyway)
    Thanks

The LT panniers had their cab roof side gutters moved in by a few inches for clearance reasons. A pic is here: http://geoff-plumb.fotopic.net/p36743912.html

Since 5764, 5786, etc have carried this mod for most of their existance now, I'm for leaving it. It hardly a major thing, and is a nod to the fact that if these engines hadn't gone to LT, they probably wouldn't be with us now.

Wrong ! To those of us who lived with the 57xxs in the 1950s and 60s, and have also built models, I am afraid the cut back roof just doesn't look right. It should be (relatively) easy to rectify on those engines in GWR or BR livery.

Oh, and by the way, I don't SCREAM.

Its part of the engines history though! I think theirs more important things in life to remembert other than a couple of inches of metal! ](*,)

No 5786 only running Saturday and Sunday, it will then be out for turning on Monday and repainting during the rest of the week. The other loco this weekend is 3803 so I expect this will stay in for the whole week.

5552 is also expected to emerge from the works sometime during the week and may be out running in (but dont quote me on that just yet).

Adrian - I remember travelling Bridgnorth to Hampton Loade and return in October 1971 behind an LT liveried 5764 - paint was battered but it looked smart as it had been cleaned. Think it was put into service immediately upon arrival.

Wasn't 5786 painted SILVER for a while in 1977 when it was at Hereford? (Or was that an April photo in the RM??!!)

Who's funeral is that locomotive going to? Has someone significant died? Oh no, its just the damn BR black brigade. Pity, she looked so good in GWR green. I look forward to seeing her in green again.
