Indeed. Nothing surpasses an A4 IMO.

ELR roster page is updated to reflect 60009, but diesel is stated as D1501 (in green) each day, nice 1960's transition era combination. If 56006 was out on it's own it would be a bit parky with a no heat diesel.

I have never really taken much notice of the chimney on an A4, but it caught my eye in that picture, bit of an ungainly lump when you compare the sleek lines elsewhere?

Have the persevered ones been cut down a bit, don't recall the chimney looking that prominent on them?

Tch tch - you should know by now that if there is one thing that is taboo on this forum, it is to criticise any aspect of the aesthetics of Gresley’s bathtub on wheels A4 ... ;)

Surely the bathtub is Stanier's? The A4 (at least without valences) more closely resembles a flying banana...

This wont be tolerated. The A4 is probably the greatest machine ever made this side of Concorde which is of course the finest thing created by the hand of humankind. They have it all. Aesthetics and Function.

Certainly the cab height had to be altered to fit within the loading guage, would expect the chimney has to follow suit

Looks the normal size comparing with other images. You could always push it forward I guess if it was too tall (well Lockheed Tristars could get manage with an S shaped exhaust passage on the rear engine).

Wasn't it the intake that was S shaped, not the exhaust?

And the true fact there are 6 A4,s out of the L.N.E.R. in preservation and 2 in america 4 in U.K. and 60022 still holds the fastest speed for a steam loco in the world 126 mph up stoke bank even when my dad went from leeds central in early 60,s going on 60022 with his mates to the plant in doncaster shedbashing it was just another A4 to him but he was proud he got to travel behind 60022 (p.s. i wouldent probably get the chance to ride behind her but remember mallard running in the 1980,s) and seeing what locos were been withdrawn and the last of em in the works been overhauled. And with the germans holding the 2nd fastest loco 224mph with the flying hamburger, and makes mallard such a crowd puller at the N.R.M
