I think you should fit a Klaxon, Anthony. And, if you do, can I have your whistle? I need one for my loco!

I don't need to read more, I'm fully aware of the criteria used to determine power classification, which was was not simply the nominal tractive effort, as you seem to think. As for 6619, it has the tractive effort to easily start 7 coaches on the 1 in 49 and, on lesser gradients has a fine turn of speed but you try and get more than a sustained 12 mph out of it on that gradient with 7 on.

The ol49's at Wolsztyn, and pm36-2 are fitted with diesel horns.. so there is a precedent :), they sound interesting when they reach a level crossing and make a diesel sound !

Apparently it's an EU reccomendation, that all locomotives have a distinct, audible sound... translated in Poland to everything sounding the same..
You never know.. knowing how the UK likes all things EU driven.. maybe all our mainline steam locomotives may inherit one someday as well?

Well actually YES it does matter - to those of us interested in accurate, quality restorations which are not the sole preserve of the NRM. After all a locomotive communicates with the senses in a number of ways not least its distinctive sound. Clearly it is the owners perogative to fit whatever whistle his or her ego demands even, for reasons which baffle some of us, a chime whistle. But doing so takes things a small step nearer to becomming a fairground ride rather than a popular accurately portrayed timewarp.

Steve - fit your engine with a Savage Siren, far more fun than a whistle!

I've heard that the Kylchap conversion on 6619 was not made to improve steaming (good enough already) but to ease maintenance, replacing the GW jumper top chimney which was quite maintenance-intensive. It's probably academic now as wherever the loco ends up it is unlikely to be worked anywhere near as hard and the jumper top would probably never be needed even if it was fitted!

When will people finally get it into their heads that is is not up to them to tell other people to do with their property?

No-one likes being told what to with their own things by some arrogant anorak. Tone is everything. The 56/66xx's are around in some numbers, and are hardly any sort of design or operating milestone. The Welsh enginemen generally preferred there pre-grouping 0-6-2's, some of which survived alongside the GW ones for a surprisingly long time.

The NRM is of course in a different situation, but even there no doubt from time to time compromise is necessary. In fact, its probably always necessary, none of the locos having been taken out of service in exactly the condition they were built.

Not having much money I myself am just grateful that people will spend so much so I can continue to enjoy the sight of working steam locos.

    Great videos, thanks for sharing.

Is it my imagination, or does 45428 sound a little "off-beat", as though the valve settings need a final tweak?

    Taxi......

I sincerely hope you are not referring to all the rest of us as "arrogant anoraks". I strongly object if you are.

Not wishing to argue about such things too much, but many BR standards had hooter whistles such as that on 76079. 75027 is also so fitted.

    Hello Owen,

In BR days they most certainly didn't ;).
The Pacifics all had chime whistles, as did many of the Class 5s. Everything else had a GW whistle...

    Very Best Wishes,
    Bob.

When is your birthday? I will procure a push button mechanical Klaxon for the occasion.....

Roddy put a whistle on poor old Doogal, it had managed without one since 1906!

A whistle eh? Is there something unusual about it? Or have I missed something in the last 50-odd postings ...

Interesting that the second NYMR video says that it is the loco's final trip on the Moors. I wonder if its new owners would have the option of keeping it at Grosmont?

With all of its non-GWR attachments, it doesn't look like the loco is being allowed out of Yorkshire yet anyway.
