70000 Britannia

It is the newsreel for the locomotives naming in 1951. Now even I, as a fan of these locomotives, know that a lot of the claims made are a bit wide of the truth!

Isn't Britannia now owned by Jeremy Hoskins? He must have some money for the overhaul!! Also does anyone know if he has a website as I can't seem to find one?

Yep, 70000 was bought by JH from Pete Waterman but is being overhauled by Pete's LNWR company at Crewe.

You mean Andrew Naish, he owned C.P but sold her to Marcus Robertson of Steam Dreams, who then subsequently sold her on to the MHRPS.

Andrew Naish is still involved in steam, being involved with the Somerset and Dorset Railway Trust at Washford, WSR.

Also i dont think Jeremy Hosking has a website, as he prefers to stay out of the limelight.

I don't blame JH staying out the limelight. Probably the best way for them to be.

 

Not Sure about locos he owns outright, although being a member of the S&DRT he will own a miniscule piece of 53808 Sorry 88 the S&D 7F based on the West Somerset, along with countless 1000`s of other members of said trust.

 

Reverting to 70000 for a moment, some photgraphs or video appeared a while ago**--cannot recall where I saw it just now--showing one of LNWR's chaps at Crewe with the component pieces of 70000's firebox, which appeared to be in a state of complete "dismantlement" ! He was pointing out how he thought that part of the firebox original construction had been altered as they went along, given that it was the first of the class.
Sounds as though it will be a "very" expensive job, so the locomotive is in the right ownership.

Britannia's present boiler is No 809. This was fitted to 70008 when new.

I knew when I posted that piece about what the LNWR man said that someone would quite correctly say that 70000 is not carrying its original boiler, but maybe the chap at Crewe didn't know that! Did anyone else see the piece I am referring to? The chap pointed out several welded up rivet or stay holes on one of the firebox side sheet edges as he talked, and inferred it was the "prototype Britannia boiler". Clearly not.

There are a few people who have made the same mistake of assuming only one boiler was like that. Several of the early boilers had the same problem, and it might well have been as many as all of the first 15, which were numbered 801 to 815. They were made in a batch ahead of the frame building. As was the method at Crewe, the sheets were all drilled before bending and assembly. It wasn't until the assembly stage that it was discovered that the rivet holes in the joint between the copper doorplate and wrapper didn't line up, by which time production was well under way. The remedy at the time was to plug the holes and re-drill. Not as durable as new plate of course. Boiler 809 having this defect would imply that at least nine of them had been drilled before the problem came to light, and therefore carried the problem throughout their lives.

 

With reference to the above, it will be interesting to see how 70013's boiler fares as I believe that is No. 928 and therefore should have been constructed correctly.

I'm sure I saw that too - Almost for sure.....

 

70013 has boiler 982 in fact, and that's correct, it doesn't have the same problem.

 

A bit off topic but does 70013 have 70012's tender?

plus I cant wait to see both Brits together again, both at Norwich [-o<
