The air compressor says that it is one of the Turkish ones. Was it arriving in the UK or leaving?

Just to add a bit more info. I've been told it's being exported to Ashdod in Israel this coming Saturday.

And will thereby become the second steam locomotive in that land. What an awful thought...a country with only one steam loco! Private restoration or for the IRM?

It isn't 45170, pump's on the wrong side and there's no ejector pipe along the boiler.

hmm, i wonder how long it will be before some nouveau rich eastern european or oriental buys something more critical to Preservation and exports it?

I always remember a certain Castle (that I thought was lost to us forever) being sold...

    Hey railway folks
does anyone actually know the latest on the two Turkish 8f's that it were repatriated back in 2011.
Is 45166 still at Barry Railway Centre, eventhough i can remember reading in the steam railway magazine that the owning group had sold the engine in order to preserve other Turkish 8f's still out in Turkey.
And I also remember that 45160 had moved from the Locomotion Shildon to the North Norfolk Railway, where it would be stored pending overhaul.

so can anyone confirm that it was actually 45166. because it would be a great shame after the 2011 repatriation to be losing it again. Or is the locomotion that is pictured at Southampton docks another Turkish 8f's that has been repatriated.

If anyone could help on this issue i would gratefully appreciate it.

    Many thanks,
    Yrm

It is 45166, compare photographs of when it arrived, to the one above..
It's got the same dents in the firebox cladding, paint/rust scars on the cab, and bends in the running plate... Though it's chimney appears not to be making the journey (at least not on the smokebox).

what a strange turn of events... Why bother going to the cost of buying another one from turkey if your selling and exporting the one you bought, if your brokering loco sales for £££, then buy one in turkey and send it direct to Israel ?

Theres still 2 at risk in turkey, one complete.. The other a bit far gone.

Would be nice (and appropriate) to have it restored in Israel, they did run there.

Yes it does seem a bit odd. An 8F is ideal for many railways. Not the biggest firebox, decent axle-loading and not exactly a complicated bit of engineering. Can handle whatever a 25mph could throw at it without wearing itself out.

Give it another five years and there will be calls for it to be brought home and restored to BR black!

More opportunities to see 8Fs on passenger charters would certainly be welcome. When given the right routes away from the high speed lines, they have proved their capabilities time after time and their cylinder cock quirkiness just adds to their character. Lake District May 2007 060.jpg

Since they are short of Steam loco's perhaps we could interest them in a Nice new Standard 3, or a Clan... Payment upfront of course...

Not sure what trade relations between Israel and Turkey are like at the moment, but I can see how it might be more straight forward for the Israelis to acquire a steam loco from the UK, and so worth the extra transport costs, etc.
