I see that Beamish have announced the purchase of the Duke of Sutherland's 0-4-4T "Dunrobin" and coach from Canada - see http://beamishtransport.blogspot.com/

What excellent news - I've always thought that this loco would be an excellent 'returnee'. Well done to all involved.

Very good news - possibly the best repatriation since the M7. It will be great to see a quirky Victorian loco in action in such a great setting. This loco has a really interesting history.

Champion! Hopefully all of the modifications will be removed. This is a rough guess but once the Y7's finished it's 3 year deal it'll be replaced by Dunrobin. But of far more importance than bringing her back to the UK or overhauling her, what livery will she be in! ;-)

Seems a rather strange choice for the North of England Open Air Museum to spend its (Council Taxpayers) money on! What is the North East connection?

There's no connection that I can see but it is a victorian engine that should be able to go around their corners! I wonder how long it will be before the GCR try to get it for a gala!

Firstly, congratulations to Beamish! Wonderful news.

Is Dunrobin a unique design for the Duke, or was she related to the mainline classes of the time? And if so how?

    Thanks

This is excellent, some might see it as slight shame it won't be in Scotland, but Northern England is a far better than thousands of miles away. The number of preserved Highland railway engines in the UK will now double!

Firstly - Beamish is not publicly funded - end of

Secondly - I hope that this will allow me to see more of her than driving all the way from Salt Lake City to Cranbrook, and only seeing a buffer beam through locked doors!

    Mind you - I was driving a 4.6 TBird!

Brilliant news, another historic Scottish loco back where it belongs, well nearly! As above , Scottish engines are a bit thin on the ground.

Best news I've heard all month. Look forward to seeing in in steam at Beamish - and hopefully Bo'ness, Brechin and Aviemore at some point.

Sharpies started in Manchester, it wasn't until 1903 that they became part of North British in Glasgow. DunRobin was owned by Duke of Sutherland / Highland Railways.

Perhaps Beamish should pick the NER livery?

However, IIRC Beamish is largely self-funded and gets very little of its current funding from the local councils.

TBH if the investment involved in repatriating and restoring "Dunrobin" is rewarded with enough extra visitors to Beamish Museum, and the local area, then it will be money well spent!

I suspect that this is part of a larger plan......these things often are. We'll have to wait and see on that score!

Anyway, it will be nice to see the loco (etc) back in the UK. Well done to all involved.

Dunrobin was my reason to visit Fort Steele. Now I don't have to go to the middle of nowhere to see in service!

Great news shes coming back home. Such a lovely looking victorian loco. Hopefully she'll earn Beamish some dollars doing a few visits to other lines some time in the future? We can always hope!

A visit on the back of a lorry to its old home? Maybe a passing stop at the Strathspey (how I wish they had a vintage set).
