Buses at Brooklands

    Last week I went on a Neil Cave organised photo charter using 2 buses from the London Bus Museum at Brooklands, namely RTL139 and TD95.
    It was my first charter using buses and what a most enjoyable and relaxed event it was. Many thanks to Neil and everyone else involved in making it such an enjoyable time. I'm definitely looking forward to another opportunity with some buses.

    Thank you sir for posting those, i enjoyed looking. I always had a soft spot for those AEC RT's, grand machine to drive .

    From a drivers point of view, can you imagine London traffic with those tiny rear view mirrors ? These day on HGV's and buses the mirrors are huge, at least 6 of em on HGV's.
    But we did manage in the 60/70's without exchanging much paint with other vehicles.

    I did my apprenticeship in vintage bus restoration, and was brought up driving old buses. Never had any problems with small mirrors driving in London traffic as if something hit me I knew it was going to come off worse! Invariably "I didn't see you..." me- "It's big, it's red/green, its a bus!!!"

    Nothing as satisfying as a successful crash change without using the clutch :) Always enjoyed AEC pre-select boxes too.

    Takes a bit of mastering but once you've got the knack it never leaves you.
    Old Edgar Bradshaw, SKILLED tanker driver, only had one leg (the left one was wood). In those days big HGV's only had crash boxes, none of your new fangled fancy gearboxes. Well Edgar only EVER used the clutch to move away from a standing start. Edgar showed me how to do it and bingo, I was one of the lads. Now a David Brown crash box and an old Gardner engine, if you can change without clutch on one of those you too can be "one of the lads".
    I did like those Wilson pre select boxes though, a god send in heavy traffic (London).:)
