And yet, when the NRM says that Lode Star can't steam again because it would destroy her authenticity, everyone complains that the NRM is making a fuss about nothing :rolleyes1:

I don't either. There's the same argument over 'City of Birmingham', iirc, but in both cases they are still pretty much as they left main works after overhaul for preservation. Also iirc, great care had to be taken on Lode Star, when contractors were removing asbestos from her, to ensure that she remained as undisturbed as possible, which doubtless added to the time & cost of the work.

Of course it could be argued that, minus asbestos, Lode Star is no longer in the same state as originally preserved and, therefore, fair game.

Shouldn't worry too much about returning Lode Star to steam as given time the GW boys will butcher half a dozen other locos to make a new Star. :)

    Re: Scotsman Overhaul updates

The obvious thing to do would be to take a "Castle" chassis and stick a smaller boiler and cylinders on it. However, the last unrestored "Castle", 7027, is owned by Pete Waterman, who is opposed to conversions of existing engines to re-create long-lost types...

I believe that Tyseley were looking at such a conversion a few years back using 5043 or 5080 and a No 1 boiler. Well before either of them were considered for restoration in the original forms.

The problem with that particular combination would be that you end up with a Castle boiler left over - as far as I am aware they were unique to the class.

Regarding the removal of Asbestos making 4003 'fair game' - if I were to go and scratch a tiny mark in the paintwork with my fingernail (not something I'd ever do I hasten to add) would that make repainting it fair game?

    Re: Scotsman Overhaul updates

... considering that 5043 and 5080 were bought to supply spares for 7029, a left over Castle boiler would not really have been an issue ...

    Re: Scotsman Overhaul updates

The NRM seemed to have or have had a mixed policy regarding the reasons one loco should steam and another shouldnt, and the reason it was overhualed at Swindon and its all authentic etc doesnt should of therefore stood with 70013

But seom reason it suits them to steam 70013 the last steam Locomotive to be overhauled ( and painted at Crewe )

I would be confident in saying if a fund to steam Lode star was opened the money would be there within the week

May i suggest Tysley to overhaul it and limited number of runs on the mainline Shakspeares etc

Yes i would be part of that

I certainly wouldn;t want to mess with 7027 as it represents a sort of halway house between 5029/5051/5080 and 5043/7029.
be good to see what difference if any the three row superheat makes.
Perhaps Bob Meanley could give an opinion on this.

    Cheers Dave

Can I make the point that 70013 had been steamed at Bressingham circa 1972/73 before the NRM even came into existence. It was used regularly for footplate rides for several years.

I am sure Anthony could will give an insight to their policy if requested, my guess it it's not a black and white decision and takes the history and merits of each loconotive into consideration.

    Re: Scotsman Overhaul updates

I may be completely wrong here, but I have memories that, when 5080 was restored, there were plans to use the three row superheated boiler from 7027 which was still owned by Tysley at the time. Does anyone know if that's actually what happened?

That was my understanding certainly in the late 70's early 80's, as 1 of them was thought to have had a cracked cylinder casting

I'd love to see Lode Star in steam as I think the stars were one of the most beautiful locomotives ever designed. To me any loco that is stuffed and mounted is a waste.

I would love to see a Star in action but I 100 % agree with the NRM on Lode Star. You might be interested to know with the loco at ‘Steam’ in Swindon you can get right up close and even stand on the footplate. The craftsmanship in that cab is just beautiful and in 2012 it brings a lump to my throat having the opportunity to stand on the footplate of a locomotive last out-shopped by Swindon. That’s something unique and I wholeheartedly agree it should remain as it is.
