A steady rather than sparkling day with UoSA but probably wise given the repair. We kept time to Carlisle. Starting out of Oxenholme loop was no picnic with 450 tons behind the tender. Over Grayrigg at 36 and, surprisingly, no burst of speed afterwards so we only hit 63 and were through Tebay at 58. Speed fell away quickly to 28 by Scout Green but this was then more or less maintained except for the last half mile with 25 over Shap. That said, we flew down to Carlisle in under even time from the summit. Luckily, the fallen tree that had closed the Newcastle line at Haltwhistle was cleared just in time for us to run across to Hexham. What a stunning line this is and the setting sun sets it off so well. Near the front, you could hear No 9 chattering away up the long haul to Brampton and leaning to the curves as we descended at (the constrained) line speed to our final stop. A competent performance in the hands of Keith Murfin/Pete Sheridan to Carlisle and Brian Grierson/Steve Hanczar beyond.

As for Days 7 and 8 - it seems that an A4 will probably continue to feature but details are TBA.

Many thanks for the update Al, much appreciated.

I guess a steady day was by far the best option in view of what had happened and in view of the current main line steam loco situation.

And as I said on the Cheltenham Flyer thread, how many on board, apart from the few timers like you and me, are bothered much about the details of the actual running? They just want a steam loco on the front, with the right noise sometimes and a bit of smoke and steam drifting past the windows from time to time. Or am I totally wrong on that?

Fingers crossed you keep steam on the front for the rest of the trip now.

Off topic slightly now. In view of the main line steam fleet situation, I wonder what will haul the 9th July SD trip this year? I haven't booked yet as I do NOT want to be on that train, (and haven't even started a group booking), without being certain of a Bulleid on the front.

I have just posted provisional times for Day 7. The itinerary has apparently changed somewhat and is now Weardale-Darlington-Sunderland-Tyne Yard-Battersby. I am not sure where on the Weardale the train starts. www.uksteam.info/tours/t13/t0515a.htm

People on the train are saying that July 9th will be 34046 out of and return to Waterloo as of May 14th!

This. but without Saltburn, is about what the tour brochure map is suggesting. It gets complicated when you have an A4 doing it!

don't think a steam engine has been through the tunnel at sunderland since the metro was extended to sunderland, something to do with the overhead power supply, not wire but an aluminuim beam, ithink.

As I understand it, steam was banned, even in 'light steam', under the Metro wires, because of the danger of damaging the insulators. There was supposed to be a run round the Durham coast with the K1, a couple of years ago, iirc, which had that bit caped at the last moment when someone realised that this was going to pass 'under the wires', & even the subsequent idea of a diesel to haul the train along the affected stretch was thrown out.

So, if this actually happens, it'll be a pleasant surprise. We will see.

I'm just glad I did that line behind 'Blue Peter' in the late 90s...

Does it now. Well that's news to the people on the trip who are expecting a DL to be attached at Tyne Yard to pull the train back from Battersby. Nothing said about DL haulage at this end.

DL pilot from Cliff House to Tyne Yard, perhaps? Then swap the DL to the back before heading to Battersby. That's the guess of a well-informed friend, anyway.
