Has a Southern Pacific showed everyone how to go up a hill today (3/8) on the CME? It looks as though the 63 or so miles from Carnforth (North) to Carlisle were covered in 64 minutes.

It's nothing if not consistent! Haven't got figures from Carnforth North, but it was about 64 minutes start to stop from the UDGL on 12 May last year. So looks like an excellent run, and just adds to 35018's reputation on the climbs. It wasn't particularly extended either from what I recall, so there's no worries here about lack of reserves of power.

Got to say it looks a good run - but looking at RTT for Shap Harrisons Sidings loop it was right time.

35018 flew up Shap with little if any exhaust. Video to follow later.

I can vouch that it was a superb northbound run! Scintillatingly close to being inside even time had it not been for a cautious run from Upperby; Steve Chipperfield not best pleased with the amount of grease picked up around Scout Green or it could have so easily have been around mid 40s at the top. Some figures to keep everyone going:

    Yealand: 40
    Milnthorpe: 68
    Oxenholme: 59
Grayrigg: 47.5 (another slip a mile before caused speed to decline below the 50 mark)
    Tebay (MP 31 1/2): 78
    MP 37 1/4: 40.5

    Carnforth-Carlisle: 64mins 58secs.

Such a superb piece of kit!

About 53 mph at Ais Gill summit last May, but we did have the benefit of a clear run straight through.

What characterises this loco (and MNs generally) is the business-like chatter from the chimney. No histrionics - just pace. Tornado is also deceptively quiet as well.

It suddenly got even noisier when it popped a safety valve as it came through Kirkby Stephen.
