There was another early attempt at a DMU by the LMS. The Bury to Holcombe Brook branch was electrified initially with overhead lines as a trial, in 1913. In 1918 it was converted to 1200 v dc third rail as an extension of the Manchester to Bury line, and the Manchester -Bury emus then ran on it.

The two, two car overhead units which were then redundant were converted into a demu and were tried out on Blackpool to Lytham but weren't a success.

The streamlined one in the last picture was converted after the war to an overhead line maintenance unit for the MSJA line from Manchester to Altrincham

To be fair, even 37s needed the services of brake tenders.

Would that be Anthony Sayer's book, perchance?

I read somewhere once that brake tenders were regarded as a bit of a nuisance, they caused extra shunting, always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and locomen did not like propelling them.

    I’ve heard the same.
