You don't say where you are based, Jack but KWVR will accomodate you at 16 - see FOOTPLATE EXPERIENCE

There was quite a long previous discussion on this subject that had a lot of useful things to consider before buying a course, as there are lots of different types of course available, and which one is suitable would depend on what specifically you are interested in.

I would recommend the Clive Groome course. It is about the best priced and offers the most for your money. Held at Isfield on the Lavender Line. There are volunteers there who come from Essex so it can't be too far. If you just want a footplate ride, the Lavender Line offer a ride for £5.00 but you don't get to do much. On the Footplate Days & Ways course, you start at 08.30 and go on until 16.30. Lunch is included too. Clive is a ex BR Top Link driver who has instructed many people from the Preserved Railway scene so you will get a very good grounding in loco management. Wherever you go though, you are bound to enjoy it! Good luck.
